Chapter 276 276: 276
Chapter 276 276: 276
"Fuck." The moment Yang Ze heard her mention Lin Meilin, he knew his cover had been blown, and the mission had been compromised. Staying here would lead to only one outcome… Death.
Without wasting another moment, Yang Ze erupted with all his internal energy, wanting to use his skills all at once.
He wasn't fooled by the lazy appearance of the heavenly beauty in front of him. He knew exactly what kind of woman she was. Someone who was willing to chop off her own daughter's head wasn't someone he should face. Especially not when her strength was vastly superior to his own.
Yang Ze's sudden outburst didn't seem to surprise Yun Ning, who seemed to have expected it. She merely snapped her fingers as the world around them came to a still. From the rain to the sounds of insects to the distant sound of people talking… everything came to an abrupt halt. It was as if the world itself had stopped moving.
Yang Ze, however, didn't notice it. His entire focus was on the woman in front of him, who was still lying there lazily, looking at him with smiling eyes.
"What?" Yun Ning's voice, which was filled with curiosity, sounded in Yang Ze's ears as she rested her cheek on her right hand while looking at him with her large, dreamy eyes.
"You want to fight?"
Her words only made Yang Ze burst out with an even greater strength as he waved his hand, summoning a wind blade, wanting to slash her in half.
But before he could even manifest the wind blade, Yun Ning merely tapped her long finger on the chair and with it, the air in front of Yang Ze's hands twisted before a small explosion sent him fumbling back.
The force was so great that his body didn't stop till it bounced off the ground three times.
"Ughh…" Even though the force didn't hurt him, it was more than enough to churn Yang Ze's insides.
At the moment, he felt like he had been hit by a full-speed train, and his inner organs were displaced. He even wanted to throw up, but couldn't. An extremely uncomfortable feeling took over his body that was worse than any kind of pain as he barely managed to pull himself together and stood up with shaky legs, as if he would fall the next moment.
"Is that all you have got?" Yun Ning's lazy voice once again sounded in his ears, making him grit his teeth and raising his hand once again. But this time, he didn't manifest another windblade, but instead chose to use the ability that he hadn't used since he acquired it…
"Skyweave."
Muttering in a soft voice, Yang Ze clapped with great difficulty as the air in front of him twisted, and a thin, almost transparent wall appeared.
"OH!?" This time, Yun Ning's voice finally had a trace of surprise in it as she looked at him with one closed eye.
"You aren't even in the Core Condensation realm, and yet you can already control wind element."
"How interesting…"
The more she looked at the scene in front of her, the more surprised she got.
Since time immemorial, only Core Condensation realm powerhouses and above were qualified to control the power of elements. It has been the case from the very beginning and will be till the ned of time. And yet… such an unchanging truth of the world was shattered right in front of her eyes.
To say that Yun Ning was shocked would be an understatement.
Yun Ning's breathing paused for a moment before returning to normal as her lips curled up.
"How are you doing it?" Clicking her tongue in wonder, she merely flicked her finger and with it, a small stone shot towards Yang Ze that only grew in size.
By the time it reached Yang Ze, the stone that was pea-sized had turned into fist-sized, ready to smash his head.
But the scene of Yang Ze flying back with bloodied nose didn't occur.
The moment the stone hit the translucent wall in front of Yang Ze, it began to shatter. And within moments, the entire stone turned to dust, but not a single speck landed on Yang Ze, who was still standing there with a grim expression.
"A defensive wind wall." Yun Ning's eyes flashed as she spoke in a soft voice, almost a whisper.
"What else are you hiding?" She once again snapped her fingers, and with that, the wind wall that Yang Ze summoned began to twist and deform before disappearing completely.
"Damn it." Seeing his only defensive talent was taken care of so easily, Yang Ze couldn't help but curse in a low voice before taking a step back as his body blurred and six identical clones appeared around him.
But instead of rushing towards Yun Ning, every clone rushed in a different direction.
And if that wasn't enough, Yang Ze even used his illusion to conjure a few illusory rabbits, which ran in a straight line in every direction.
"Hmm…" Every move that Yang Ze displayed caught Yun Ning by surprise.
When Lin Meilin mentioned it to her, she thought she was exaggerating things, but now that she saw it with her own eyes, she finally understood that she had downplayed his skills.
She merely glanced at the illusion and clones that Yang Ze summoned as a playful smile appeared on her face before she tapped her soft finger on the chair once again, sending out an invisible ripple.
And the moment the ripple touched the illusory rabbit, it dispersed it into nothingness.
But the ripple didn't stop there. It kept on moving, obliterating every illusory thing Yang Ze summoned in its path. And if that wasn't enough, the moment the rippled touched Yang Ze's first clone, it shattered it into countless blue lights as well.
"Fuck." Yang Ze didn't even have time to react when he saw the ripple spreading out, and before he knew it, only his true body was standing there, still trying to escape the place.
"..."
He was about to use the rest of his skills, but before he could do that, Yun Ning snapped her fingers, and with that, Yang Ze once again lost his control over the internal energy.
"Come here." Without waiting for him to respond, Yun Ning waved her fingers as Yang Ze's body uncontrollably flew towards her before stopping right in front of her.
"Hmm…" This time, Yun Ning looked at him from top to bottom, as if wanting to see through him before speaking in a soft voice.
"When Lin Meilin said she had taken in a disciple, I was truly surprised."
"I mean… I had known her for years."
"Decades? Centuries? Millennials?"
"I don't remember anymore."
"But the fact is that I have known her for as long as I can remember, and this is the first time she has taken in a disciple."
"You know, I really wanted to see what kind of person could move her heart and make her change her mind."
"And now, looking at you…"
She once again looked at the doll-like girl in front of her from top to bottom before clicking her tongue in wonder.
"Tsk… tsk… tsk…"
By now, Yang Ze had calmed down.
No longer struggling to free himself or fight against the woman in front of him.
The small clash between them, or if it could even be called that, had made him acutely aware of the chasm between them. She didn't even move, and he was already this miserable. Even if he were to use all his skills, Yang Ze wasn't sure if he could even escape from her, much less harm her.
Initially, he thought she was gonna kill him, but listening to her now… it seemed it was him who was overcomplicating things.
"Oh! Have you calmed down this soon?" Yun Ning was expecting him to struggle and even fight a bit more, but to her surprise, he stood still, not fighting back.
"....."
"......"
The two of them looked at each other in silence for a while before Yun Ning asked the question that had been puzzling her from the first moment she saw the girl.
"Have we met before?"
Her question almost made Yang Ze's heart leap out of his throat as he tried his best not to show any abnormalities.
He stood like that for a while before shaking his head in response.
"No."
He merely said a single word, not daring to speak further in case he made things worse.
"Hmm… Why do I feel like we know each other?" The more Yun Ning spoke, the softer her voice got. She felt like she had seen her before, but no matter how hard she tried to recall, she just couldn't find this face in her memories, and yet, something inside her told her the opposite.
"....."
With every passing moment, her eyes kept scanning Yang Ze continuously, making his palm sweat.
And just when Yang Ze thought she was going to remember, Yun Ning let out a defeated sigh and simply shrugged in response.
"Forget it."
Exhaling a mouthful of air, she snapped her fingers, freeing Yang Ze from his awkward immobility.
"Lin Meilin sent you here for the mission, didn't she?"
Listening to her question, Yang Ze didn't hide anything and responded with a nod. But during the entire time, he was cursing Lin Meilin and her nine generations for ratting him out.
"Good. I am gonna be your 'informer' here." Mentioning the word 'informer', Yun Ning's lips curled up, and she continued speaking.
"What did she tell you to do?"
This time, Yang Ze didn't hide anything. Although he didn't know what kind of games Lin Meilin and Yun Ning were playing, he decided to go along. It was better to accomplish it as soon as possible and head out of this damned place.
"She just told me to head to the imperial city to get one item from the treasury, and someone will help me."
"As for what the item is and who is going to help me… She didn't mention anything."
"Heh." Yun Ning couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle. "That's Meilin for you."
After a brief silence, she tapped her fingers a few times before looking at Yang Ze once again.
"How old are you?"
Yang Ze thought for a moment before giving her an honest answer.
"Eighteen."
"...."
"And you are this short?" Yun Ning couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as she looked at the girl.
When she first saw her, she was expecting her to be twelve or at most fifteen years old. But who would have thought she was this old?
"What?"
"Didn't your mother give you enough food?"
Ignoring Yang Ze's dark expression that was turning increasingly grim, she kept on muttering to herself.
"You are already at the peak of Vein Expansion, and yet you are this short!"
"Why don't you practise a technique to increase your height?"
"Or maybe eat some pills that can increase your height and breasts."
For a moment, Yang Ze wanted to shout profanities, but managed to hold back. From Yun Ning's words, one thing was clear… She didn't know he was a man.
Suppressing the raging fire in his heart after being humiliated again and again, Yang Ze forced a smile on his face.
"Tch. Boring." Yun Ning was expecting him to burst in a fit of rage, but his reaction made her lose interest.
"What is the item that I need to get?" Ignoring her ramblings, Yang Ze asked the most important question that had puzzled him since the very start.
From the moment Lin Meilin assigned him this task till now… he didn't know what he was supposed to take from the Imperial Palace.
"..." Yun Ning didn't give him an immediate reply but gazed at the sky for a long time.
And just when Yang Ze wanted to repeat his question, she spoke in an incomparable soft voice.
"You have been in this place for how long?"
"Weeks, I think." Yang Ze, who had spent most of his time in the basement, wasn't sure about it either, so he replied in a somewhat doubtful voice.
"And during this entire time, haven't you ever wondered why it never stopped raining?"
"....." The moment she mentioned it, Yang Ze's eyes narrowed into slits as his brain tried its best to understand the meaning behind those words.
"Usually, someone like you isn't even qualified to listen to it, much less be involved in this matter."
"But since you are the first and only disciple of Meilin, I think it is just for you to know what is actually going on."
Taking a short breath, Yun Ning's eyes flashed with a glint as she kept on looking at the sky before speaking in a somewhat hoarse voice.
"Other than rain, is there anything else that you have observed during your stay in this place?"
Yang Ze thought for a moment before giving her a nod.
"The unnecessary cruelty of the people." Thinking about the scene of children being cooked alive and being used as materials… he couldn't help but clench his teeth.
"Hmm…" Yun Ning just gave him a nod as she looked in the direction of the Imperial palace before uttering in a chilling voice.
"And why do you think it is?"
"..." Yang Ze tried to think of an answer but couldn't. So he just shrugged in response.
Yun Ning wasn't surprised by his lack of answer. She was expecting this.
"This place is rotten to its core."
"Not only this capital, but every single established capital in this entire Azure Dragon Continent…"
"Every single capital is like this."
"No matter who it is. No matter what kind of saint or good-hearted person comes to this place."
"This place will twist and corrupt them into heartless heathens."
"Mindless monsters whose sole purpose is to take pleasure in others' suffering."
"Till now, you have yet to see the truth of this place."
With a long pause, Yun Ning took a deep breath, looked at the petite, doll-like girl in front of her, narrowed her eyes and asked in a solemn voice.
"So, let me ask you again."
"Try to recall…"
"Recall what?" Yang Ze couldn't help but ask in confusion. What was she even talking about?
"....."
"....."
Yun Ning looked at him in silence for a while before uttering the most chilling words Yang Ze had ever heard in his life.
"How long have you been staying in this place?"
