Chapter 4 The Bizarre Apocalypse
Chapter 4 The Bizarre Apocalypse
Ouyang Nian scanned Luo Lin up and down, noticing her relatively rosy complexion and good spirits.
"If they were from the Survivors organization, they wouldn't have fired shots to clear out the zombies, and they certainly wouldn't have explored the building where there might be survivors without searching for supplies after clearing out the zombies."
Ouyang Nian swallowed hard, moistening his parched throat.
"Finally, if I had rushed at them like before, they would have definitely opened fire if they had guns."
Ouyang Nian stared intently at Lorraine. "Regardless of whether they can hit it or not."
...Lorraine remained silent for a moment.
"You just grabbed me like that, weren't you afraid I'd shoot you?"
Ouyang Nian replied with a grin, "It's nothing. I've been blacksmithing for so many years, what kind of people haven't I seen? I wouldn't dare say I'm incredibly perceptive, but I'm certainly good at discerning people's hearts."
Lorraine was utterly speechless. In the apocalypse, to be trusted so much by someone he had just met made him feel extremely awkward.
"Alright, alright, here you go." Lorraine took a compressed cake out of her backpack and said, "Eat slowly, don't choke."
Clearly, Ouyang Nian didn't listen, wolfing down his food and then pounding his chest.
Seeing her foolish state, Lorraine didn't want to see someone choke to death in front of her, so she could only hand her her water bottle. Ouyang Nian gulped down a mouthful of water, swallowed the food in her mouth, and let out a loud burp.
After finishing a cake and a bottle of water, Ouyang Nian regained some of his strength.
"Now, I'll tell you two more secrets." Ouyang Nian approached Lorraine mysteriously.
"Firstly, people like you have appeared before." Hearing this, Lorraine was startled and hurriedly asked, "Where did they appear?"
"These people often emerge from ruins, are clean-dressed, possess strong abilities and moral principles, and are the remnants of civilization that still existed before the end of the world."
"As for the second secret, it's that the survivor organization in this area has disappeared for quite some time. The food reserves and some of the weapons I have here were collected during that period."
Lorraine was greatly shocked, thinking to himself, no wonder he hadn't found any signs of survivors guarding this important resource area when he went to the gas station to get fuel.
Seeing this, Ouyang Nian smiled and said, "I know that in the apocalypse, it's a very strange thing to be trusted by someone you've just met. Any lone survivor would be attracted to someone like you."
Upon hearing this, Lorraine looked on with curiosity.
"Lone wolves are usually skilled and have strong beliefs. They do not want to be exploited or coerced by survivor organizations, or they cannot stand the actions of survivor organizations, so they choose to be alone."
"Someone like you, who doesn't betray easily and respects others' skills and beliefs, is the kind of companion loners most desire. After all, humans are social animals. Without the companionship of others, you'll eventually become a madman, neither human nor ghost."
Seeing Lorraine's bewildered expression, Ouyang Nian said, "You don't need to tell me your trump cards, nor do you need to let your guard down. We can get to know each other through cooperation."
Looking at Ouyang Nian, who had adopted a humble attitude, Lorraine fell into deep thought. Thinking of the impending horde of ravenous zombies, he nodded and agreed to Ouyang Nian's suggestion.
"The zombie horde is coming soon. I need to set up traps throughout this factory to stop the horde."
Ouyang Nian readily agreed: "No problem. What do you need me to do? Just protect my processing equipment in the core area."
Looking at the countdown of less than three days, Lorraine didn't have time to dwell on it and said, "I need a map of the entire factory to determine the placement of the traps."
"There's a map of this factory on the wall downstairs." Ouyang Nian led Lorraine to the map. "Got it. You study it first, I'm going to get something to eat. The armory is on your left, I'll unlock it in a bit. Figure out what weapons you need to set up traps, and remember to tell me what you're missing, I'll get them for you."
Lorraine hummed in agreement and imported the map into the data panel. After Ouyang Nian replenished his energy, he took out a hand axe from the armory and hung it on his waist as a supplement, then dragged Ouyang Nian to conduct an on-site inspection of the workshop's perimeter.
Lorraine first inspected the factory's warehouse, where she found many angle irons and reinforcing bars that had already begun to rust. Lorraine asked Ouyang Nian, "Are there any usable transport vehicles left in the factory?"
Ouyang Nian shook his head and said, "Those vehicles have been broken for a long time. I dismantled them and turned them into weapons before the steel was completely corroded. Now all that's left in the factory are some wheelbarrows."
Lorraine sighed, looked at the warehouse markers on the map, and asked Ouyang Nian, "Do you know what supplies are stored in these warehouses?"
Without the aid of transport vehicles, they simply couldn't weld these angle irons and steel bars into makeshift barricades to deploy on the roads. Their only hope now was to have enough flammable chemicals to ignite the horde of corpses. After a moment's thought, Ouyang Nian said, "These warehouses seem to contain some woven bags labeled 'toxic, flammable, and explosive,' and a lot of cables."
"Toxic, flammable, and explosive materials?" Lorraine frowned. This was clearly a building materials factory, so how could there be flammable and explosive chemicals there?
Lorraine followed Ouyang Nian to the warehouse where chemicals were stored. He ran his hand over the bag, cut it open, and looked at the yellow lumps inside. He remembered a type of highly corrosion-resistant filler that had been used in engineering projects before.
Lorraine exclaimed, "It's sulfur!" It seemed they had the material to ignite the horde of corpses. Looking at the huge amount of sulfur in the warehouse, he wished he could cover the outside of the workshop with sulfur, but remembering the large amount of toxic gas that would be produced when sulfur burned, as well as the need for making ammunition later, Lorraine gave up the idea.
Considering the large amount of cables remaining in other warehouses, Lorraine planned to guide the horde of corpses to one location for centralized incineration. With this in mind, Lorraine instructed Ouyang Nian to lead the way to inspect the cables.
As expected, the stock remained enormous. Lorraine used an axe to cut open the cable sheath, looked at the thick copper wires inside, and laughed.
"As long as we survive this zombie horde, we won't lack ammunition for a long time."
Subsequently, Lorraine and Ouyang Nian planned a route on the map, pushing cables to block off parts of the road as planned, forming an irregular funnel shape to ensure that the zombie horde could gather into one mass, so as to cause greater damage with a single fire.
Looking at Lorraine's plan, Ouyang Nian asked, "These ropes can stop the zombies to some extent, but how do you plan to lure the horde along your route?"
Lorraine replied, "I have a few alarm clocks, which aren't very good anymore, but they can still make a loud enough noise to attract zombies."
