Chapter 229 Lemon Combination
Chapter 229 Lemon Combination
Time seemed to be paused, then sped up again.
The two walked quickly toward each other and naturally clasped hands together.
The moment fingertips touch, those fragments of light and shadow separated by time seem to reunite and flow backward in this single grasp.
"Is it really you?!" In Leng Meng's voice, the frost that had accumulated over the years quietly cracked open with a warm crack.
"It's me, Xia Ning." Xia Ning nodded vigorously, her eyes welling up with tears. "I simply can't believe... to see you here again!"
"After graduation, you went to a top-tier judicial police academy, while I went to a flight attendant academy. We were worlds apart, and we lost touch with each other completely."
"I still remember how our classmates used to tease us, saying we were so close we were like one person, inseparable." Xia Ning's eyes were full of nostalgia.
"I don't know who had the brilliant idea to give us the nickname 'Lemon Duo'," Leng Meng chimed in, her cold lips curving upwards almost imperceptibly. "They said we're refreshing yet have a touch of sourness in our bones, making us the best and most compatible desk duo in the class."
"That's right!" Xia Ning's eyes sparkled. "Back then, you were always focused on your studies, your notes were always neat and tidy, and you always patiently helped me with the science subjects that gave me the biggest headache; my job was to rush up and 'reason with' you when you were being teased by the naughty boys in the back row."
Leng Meng recalled the scene from back then, and the smile on her lips deepened:
"I later heard that you became the chief flight attendant on the 'Eternal Throat Flight'? I've always wanted to experience that mysterious flight someday, but unfortunately, the nature of my work at the Abyss Prison is so special that I'm constantly bogged down in trivial matters and have almost no time for travel."
Xia Ning's gaze fell on her slightly tired eyes and brows:
"I also heard that you've risen to the position of deputy warden in Abyss Prison. These past years must have been tough, haven't they?"
Leng Meng lowered her gaze slightly, then raised it again:
"After a while, you get used to it. That place has strict rules and a tense atmosphere; being cautious and careful is the norm. But..."
She breathed a sigh of relief. "At least now I can finally catch my breath for a while."
The topic inevitably returns to reality.
Leng Meng's gaze fell once again on Xia Ning's high, protruding belly, where a new life was being conceived, a life also sown by Lin Feng.
She exhaled softly, a breath carrying both the mockery of fate and a strange sense of relief:
"Unexpectedly, fate has brought us together in this way again."
Xia Ning's gaze also fell on Leng Meng's flat stomach: "Mengmeng, you...you're also pregnant with Lin Feng's child?"
Leng Meng remained silent for a moment, then nodded very slightly.
Then she shrugged, revealing a sense of fatalism tinged with self-mockery:
"Yeah. That kid... definitely has a kind of irresistible 'charm'."
Xia Ning gripped Leng Meng's hand again, this time very tightly, as if to convey some kind of determination.
"Now that you're here, don't think about going back yet."
"A place like the Abyss Prison... is ultimately not a place to raise a child. Stay here and help us raise this child properly."
"It's lively with more people, and the kids have company. You used to be our class monitor; you were very organized and everyone respected you."
She paused, then said something startling: "Now, this family... this 'backyard' needs someone who can take charge. I think you're the perfect person to be the 'head of the backyard'."
Leng Meng was clearly taken aback by this sudden "appointment," and she almost instinctively shook her head:
"Don't joke around. You are Lin Feng's first wife (Xia Ning's belly is the biggest, you can tell at a glance), and you have the longest tenure. You should be in charge of family affairs. How can I overstep my bounds?"
"This isn't a matter of first come, first served." Xia Ning shook her head, her expression serious. "In terms of management skills and decisiveness, you far surpass me."
"This family... has special circumstances, and we'll have more children in the future. We need someone who can keep things in check, manage affairs clearly, and earn everyone's respect to coordinate and make arrangements for long-term harmony. You're the most suitable person for this role!"
Vivian, who had been in a state of information overload, seemed to have finally digested some of the information. She looked at Xia Ning, then at Leng Meng, and whispered in agreement:
"I...I think Sister Xia Ning is right. In prison, it was Sister Leng Meng who was in charge of everyone...She's very fair and very capable."
Lin Feng, who was standing to the side, was already dumbfounded.
The plot development was completely beyond his expectations.
What was imagined as a storm of tears and arguments actually turned into a nomination and appointment of the "backyard dean" in just a few words of conversation between Xia Ning and Leng Meng, the old classmates who reunited.
It's true what they say... birds of a feather flock together!
"Lin Feng~" Xia Ning suddenly called out to him.
Lin Feng snapped out of his daze and quickly walked to Xia Ning's side, carefully supporting her, his tone filled with undisguised concern:
"Ningning, slow down, don't get tired from standing for too long."
Xia Ning took the opportunity to pull Lin Feng's hand and gently placed his palm on her protruding belly.
Just then, the baby in her womb seemed to sense the movement and kicked powerfully.
"Can you feel it?" Xia Ning looked up at Lin Feng, her face regaining its maternal glow. "The baby is moving."
Lin Feng felt the vibrant life force pulsating in his palm, and his heart softened. All his tension and guilt seemed to have found a temporary place to rest.
He nodded, his gaze gentle.
Xia Ning seized the opportunity and said, "Honey, let Mengmeng be our family's 'backyard manager.' She has the ability and experience to manage a...complex group. I trust her."
Leng Meng's abilities are beyond doubt. Having her coordinate the family relationships that will inevitably be complicated in the future is perhaps the best solution.
This is both an acknowledgment of Leng Meng's status and abilities, and Xia Ning's expression of sincerity in accepting and coexisting with her.
Lin Feng took a deep breath, nodded solemnly, and looked at Leng Meng:
"Ningning is right, the capable should take the position. Mengmeng, if you're willing, I'll be entrusting the coordination of household affairs to you from now on!"
Leng Meng's gaze swept back and forth between Lin Feng and Xia Ning's faces, finally settling on Xia Ning's abdomen, where Lin Feng's hand was still pressed.
After a few seconds of silence, Leng Meng finally nodded slightly, her voice regaining its usual clarity and calmness, but without some of its previous sharpness:
"Since you trust me, and the child needs a safe and orderly environment to grow up in... then I'll take on this responsibility."
"That's more like it!" Xia Ning's face broke into a genuine smile, and she gently patted Lin Feng's hand.
"Help me to sit on the sofa for a while."
