Chapter 96 G627
After completing his morning exercise, Xu Mo drove straight to his rented courtyard.
Pushing open the slightly worn gate, he nodded slightly at the sight in the yard. The yard, which had seemed a bit messy yesterday, had now been cleaned up; the weeds had been pulled out, and although the ground was still dirt, it was much smoother. Most importantly, the roof of the small kitchen next door had been replaced with new, slightly darker but neatly arranged tiles, and there was no longer any sign of its previous dilapidated and leaky condition.
"Not bad efficiency." Xu Mo thought to himself, it seemed that his contribution points had not been wasted, the repair team found by the intermediary had indeed completed the work last night.
Tomorrow he'll be embarking on his first hunter mission, so today is a rare day of leisure. Xu Mo didn't waste any time; he first went to the nearby market and used his contribution points to buy some essential daily necessities.
After putting away the purchased items, Xu Mo drove his SUV in and parked it in the courtyard. Then, Xu Mo began to move all his supplies, along with the "door," into the bedroom on the west side. This place would henceforth be his exclusive supply warehouse and his most important secret location.
Xu Mo chose to rent this house with a yard primarily to provide a safe and permanent place for this "door." While keeping it in the car would make it easy to move, it wasn't secure enough and could easily be damaged or exposed in an accident.
After setting up the "door," Xu Mo glanced at the invisible countdown number above the door frame, which remained steadily at [00:00:00]. He took a deep breath, grasped the doorknob, and gently pushed it open.
Behind the door, the familiar surroundings and neatly stacked supplies remained unchanged; the passage of time seemed to cease to exist behind the door.
Only after confirming that everything was normal and the door's ability to open was not affected by the change of location did Xu Mo close the door with peace of mind.
In the afternoon, a light drizzle began to fall again. Xu Mo didn't pay it any mind; instead, he felt his mind become calmer amidst the sound of the rain.
However, the rain showed no sign of stopping, continuing in a dense drizzle until the next morning. Looking at the gray sky and the persistent rain outside the window, Xu Mo frowned slightly. His first mission had coincided with a rainy day; the slippery environment and limited visibility would undoubtedly increase the difficulty and risk of the operation.
After putting on his combat uniform and boots and checking his equipment, Xu Mo did not bring his AWM this time. He was only equipped with an AK47 assault rifle, a TT33 pistol, a machete, and the corresponding ammunition. In addition to basic survival supplies, he also secretly put two offensive grenades in his tactical backpack for emergencies.
Arriving at the gathering square outside the West Gate, no fewer than two hundred scavengers had already gathered. The crowd was clearly divided into groups; some were gathered in small groups, talking quietly, obviously fixed teams; others, like Xu Mo, stood alone in the rain, mostly lone wolves like him or just there to make up the numbers.
Xu Mo found the registration point with the sign "Collaborative Cleanup - Hongxing Industrial Zone," showed his ID card, and reported for duty. A military civilian employee wearing a raincoat verified his information on a tablet device, then handed him an orange armband with the letters "G6" printed on it and a disposable raincoat.
"G6 area, put on the armband. You'll be boarding a bus marked G6 in a bit. This is a raincoat, it's up to you whether you wear it or not." The staff member spoke quickly, clearly having repeated this countless times.
Xu Mo thanked him and accepted the items. Looking at the thin but well-sealed disposable raincoat in his hand, he was slightly surprised. He hadn't expected the Jiangcheng mission to provide such basic welfare. Although it wasn't worth much money, the attention to detail showed the organizers' thoughtfulness.
Xu Mo noticed that many scavengers around him simply stuffed the raincoats into their backpacks after receiving them, without putting them on immediately. He wondered if they were too lazy to wear them because the rain wasn't heavy, or if they planned to keep them to sell later or use as spares. Xu Mo thought for a moment, then folded his raincoat and put it in his backpack as well. His combat suit already had some waterproofing, so he didn't need it for the time being.
Around 8:10, a deep, dense roar of engines could be heard in the distance. Soon, a large convoy appeared in the rain and slowly drove into the assembly square.
The convoy was impressive, led by more than twenty main battle tanks painted in camouflage with their cannons proudly displayed. Following closely behind were dozens of armored personnel carriers and wheeled infantry fighting vehicles, with soldiers on guard at the machine gun positions on their roofs. Further back were a long line of military trucks covered with tarpaulins and more than twenty buses.
The truck was full of soldiers, dressed in uniform raincoats, holding standard rifles, with solemn expressions and sharp eyes, sitting quietly in the vehicle, exuding a powerful and disciplined aura.
Looking at the disciplined and well-equipped regular army, and then comparing it to the motley crew of scavengers with their varied equipment, lax discipline, and diverse expressions, Xu Mo gained a very intuitive understanding of the difference between the "regular army" and the "ragtag army." It wasn't just a difference in equipment, but a complete and utter crushing defeat in terms of organization, discipline, and morale.
"All personnel assigned to the coordinated cleanup mission, get on the vehicles immediately according to your armband numbers," an officer commanded loudly through a megaphone.
A commotion arose in the crowd as they began searching for the corresponding vehicle. Xu Mo quickly found a bus marked "G6," driven by a soldier with an expressionless face. He boarded the bus one by one, along with the other scavengers whose armbands were also marked "G6."
The seats inside the vehicle were fairly spacious. Xu Mo had just found a window seat when a man who looked to be in his thirties, carrying an old hunting rifle, leaned over and stared intently at Xu Mo's AK47, his tone tinged with envy: "Brother, nice gear! Standard issue? These things aren't easy to get."
Xu Mo glanced at him and nodded lightly: "Mm."
Seeing that Xu Mo didn't seem to want to discuss this further, the man smiled politely and didn't disturb him any longer, though he kept glancing at the well-maintained assault rifle. Among ordinary scavengers, owning a reliable standard-issue rifle was indeed a symbol of strength and wealth.
The convoy started slowly in the drizzle, then accelerated, heading towards the Red Star Industrial Zone along the cleared main road.
Because it was a convoy from Jiangcheng, the roads were clear and unobstructed, and they were obviously very familiar with the routes, so they drove very fast.
Xu Mo looked out through the rain-drenched car window. On both sides of the road lay desolate wasteland, occasionally revealing the silhouettes of abandoned villages and towns shrouded in mist—a scene of utter stillness. The convoy, like a long steel dragon, moved resolutely across the barren land.
Around noon, the convoy didn't stop. Instead, logistics personnel distributed food along the convoy – two compressed bread rolls and a bottle of drinking water for each person. Xu Mo took it and silently began to eat. The taste was so-so, but it provided some energy.
After finishing his meal, Xu Mo closed his eyes and pretended to doze off, while keeping an eye on his surroundings. About twenty minutes later, he heard someone whisper beside him, "Look, that's Forward Base Number Four ahead."
Hearing the sound, Xu Mo opened his eyes and looked out. Through the rain, a forward base with a layout similar to the Sixth Forward Base appeared ahead, complete with walls, bunkers, and watchtowers, heavily fortified. However, the convoy did not enter the base, but instead drove past its perimeter and continued deeper into the industrial area.
Xu Mo also noticed that various civilian vehicles, mostly pickup trucks and SUVs, followed the convoy on its perimeter and behind it, with the occupants mostly dressed as scavengers. It seemed that these were survivors who had accepted similar or related missions and chose to follow the official convoy, using its powerful armed forces to clear the way and ensure their safety along the way.
As evening approached, the sky grew increasingly dark, but the rain showed no signs of letting up. Xu Mo's G6 bus, along with several other buses marked with different letter numbers and some of the following civilian vehicles, broke away from the main convoy at a fork in the road and turned onto a secondary highway.
Xu Mo's spirits lifted; he knew they were almost there. He looked around and noticed seven or eight other vehicles following suit, apparently all personnel assigned to this area.
The bus bumped along the slippery, muddy road for another twenty minutes before a large complex of factory buildings came into view.
The surrounding area of the Hongxing Industrial Zone is filled with factories, warehouses, and office buildings of varying heights. Many windows are broken, and the walls are covered with stains and vines, making it look particularly dilapidated and gloomy in the rain.
The vehicle stopped in a relatively open concrete area that appeared to have been a parking lot, and everyone got out of the car one by one.
After getting off the vehicle, Xu Mo found that a team of about twenty soldiers was already waiting there. They had set up several simple rain shelters and temporary cordon lines.
A lieutenant stood under a rain shelter, watching the more than one hundred scavengers gradually gather. He picked up a megaphone and his voice clearly echoed throughout the area: "Attention everyone! I am Wang Lei, the on-site commander of this cleanup operation outside Area G."
"First, distribute tonight's and tomorrow morning's rations." The soldiers began handing out several packets of compressed biscuits and energy bars to each person.
"Secondly, each person will receive a walkie-talkie and tune it to the designated encrypted channel. This is the only way for you to communicate with each other and with our command center. Please keep it safe, as it will need to be retrieved after the mission. Any damage will require you to pay for the replacement."
Xu Mo received his rations and a palm-sized military walkie-talkie.
Second Lieutenant Wang Lei continued to assign tasks: "Your mission will last two days and one night, starting at 6:00 AM tomorrow and ending at 6:00 PM the day after tomorrow."
"Your mission is to patrol your assigned sub-areas, identify and eliminate any wandering zombies within the area. You are free to choose your method of elimination: you can eliminate them individually, call for support from nearby friendly forces, or report to us via walkie-talkie. We will dispatch a rapid response team as needed!"
Important Reminder: Zombies killed by your own team will be counted towards the bonus after confirmation. Zombies killed by calling for backup or handled by our team will not receive a bonus.
"
"Finally, and most importantly: strictly adhere to your assigned area. Do not enter other people's areas without authorization, and absolutely do not venture into undesignated industrial zones! Your armband numbers correspond to specific factory area numbers; stay in your assigned area. I repeat, do not wander off, or you will face the consequences!"
"Now, we will begin assigning specific sub-regions. Those whose numbers are called, come forward to receive your detailed region maps."
As the soldiers called out their commands, the scavengers stepped forward one by one. Small teams were usually assigned to several adjacent factory areas, while lone scavengers were randomly assigned.
"G627, Xu Mo."
Xu Mo stepped forward and took a laminated, simple map. A red circle marked an area called "Red Star Fifth Precision Machinery Processing Plant," which included three connected factory buildings, a small office building, and a material storage yard. This was his mission area for the next two days—G627.
Xu Mo glanced at the map, then looked up at the silent factory area shrouded in rain. To his left and right, lone wolves or pairs had also received maps of adjacent areas.
After exchanging brief nods as a greeting and agreeing to support each other via walkie-talkie in case of any issues, everyone dispersed to their respective mission areas.
Xu Mo tightened his gear, took a deep breath of the damp air carrying the smell of rain and rust, and strode towards the factory called "Red Star Fifth Precision Machinery".
The tall, rusted iron gate was half-open, like the mouth of a giant beast, waiting for explorers to enter.
