Chapter 10: Spider-Man in Progress
Chapter 10: Spider-Man in Progress
Peter is now both frightened and excited.
The pungent smoke seeped into his mouth through the hood, causing him to cough intermittently.
"Is anyone home?!"
The fire spread faster than he had imagined, and by the time he climbed over the outer wall into the apartment, the entire place was filled with thick, obscuring smoke.
In the blink of an eye, flames quickly spread throughout the entire room.
"Help!"
The sound came from another direction.
Peter covered his nose and rushed toward the source of the sound, which he could vaguely make out was coming from the innermost room.
boom!
Peter mustered his strength and kicked the door open.
"Hey, I'm here to help you, cough—"
Peter waved his cigarette and looked into the room.
A woman, with tears streaming down her face, held the unconscious little girl tightly in her arms.
"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. I just wanted to light a few birthday candles, I never imagined it would turn out like this!"
The woman looked at Peter with tears in her eyes. Although he looked very strange at the moment, it did not stop her from entrusting her hope of survival to him.
Peter reassured them, "It's alright, I'll take you out now."
As he spoke, he walked towards the mother and daughter.
Whoosh!
The noise behind him made Peter quickly turn around and look. The door he had just kicked open was now on fire and blocking his way out.
"Damn it!" Peter cursed under his breath, regretting that he had to kick the door down!
But now was not the time to spread negative emotions. He glanced at the window in the room, which was not yet stained by the flames.
Peter raised his hands to appear harmless and tried his best to suppress his trembling voice as he spoke:
"Listen, I need you to close your eyes and not open them no matter what happens next."
The woman hugged the girl in her arms tighter, carefully closed her eyes as Peter had asked, and let the last tear slide down her cheek.
"You can do it! You can do it!"
Peter mentally rallied himself. His plan was simple: he would grab the mother and daughter and rush out the window.
The tasks are not troublesome, and can even be described as easy.
All you need to do is hold them tight and use their ability to stick to the wall to run down.
"Remember, no matter what happens next, don't open your eyes!"
Peter cautioned that if the other person opened their eyes halfway through and saw him running on the wall, they would only become more agitated.
"Cough cough cough!"
The thick smoke was making it hard for Peter to breathe; he had to get them out of there quickly!
Peter picked up the mother and daughter, and thanks to the strength the spider gave him, their weight was not heavy at all for him.
Hold your child tight.
Peter lowered his head and said, then easily smashed the window with his shoulder. The force of the inertia did not cause him to lose his balance; his legs were firmly stuck to the spot.
Looking down, you can see that quite a few people have gathered around the street watching the scene.
Upon seeing Peter's figure, someone below gasped in surprise.
Peter didn't have time to think about anything else and started running downhill.
My abilities were bound to be exposed sooner or later, but I didn't expect it to happen so quickly.
After he came out of the window, the flames quickly spread throughout the room, leaving no room for any living thing to survive.
"You did it! You did it!"
Feeling his adrenaline surge, Peter became somewhat agitated, and even his arms, which were holding the woman, trembled uncontrollably.
After running around on the building's surface for a while, we got closer and closer to the ground street.
To ensure there were no accidents, Peter chose to jump from the wall when he was about a meter away from the ground.
As soon as he landed, pedestrians gathered around him, wanting to get a good look at him.
Fortunately, the wrestler's mask was not completely destroyed in the fire, so people could not see Peter's true face.
"You can open your eyes now, madam."
Peter let out a long sigh and released the mother and daughter from their embrace.
The woman opened her eyes and found herself on the road. The dreamlike scene made her feel as if she had been transported to another world.
She glanced at Peter, the man who had saved her life.
The opponent was wearing a comical red wrestler mask that covered his entire face, including his eyes, which were covered by sunglasses.
She expressed her heartfelt gratitude: "Without you, I can't believe what would have happened next... Thank you!"
"It's alright, how's your daughter?"
Peter was more worried about the child in the woman's arms, as she had been unconscious since he saw her.
The woman looked down at the child in her arms; her breathing was relatively steady.
"I don't know, maybe I'll have to go to the hospital to find out..."
"It will be alright." Peter guessed that the girl's coma was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.
We've now reached the ground, far from the fire scene, and the air is relatively fresh. Things should get better soon.
"Hey buddy, how did you manage to run on that wall?!"
Suddenly, someone in the crowd spoke up.
Peter was taken aback.
The woman he saved also asked curiously, "Who exactly are you?"
Peter didn't answer immediately, but instead turned to look at the approaching fire truck.
"Spider-Man, I guess..."
He said.
......
......
......
Peter walked home alone, feeling somewhat conflicted.
He had a lot to say, but found that he had no one to confide in.
Oz, who had been so eager to get him involved in the rescue, has disappeared again!
After rescuing others and waiting for the fire truck to arrive, he hurriedly left and returned to the rooftop.
However, Oz was nowhere to be found on the rooftop, as if he had never been there at all.
The remaining spider silk hammock still sits on the rooftop, confirming that Oz was indeed there not long ago.
Peter thought about many things, but he thought about most of what Oz had said before he disappeared.
These were the words Uncle Ben spoke to him before he passed away.
"When you have the ability to help others, you have no choice, because it will be your responsibility."
Peter didn't know if this counted as a demonstration of responsibility, but he knew that without his help, the mother and daughter would likely have met with dire consequences.
"I think I did the right thing."
Recalling his words before helping others and his actions while doing so, Peter believed he hadn't made any mistakes.
Despite his hesitation, he still took the step that Oz had suggested.
This feeling...
Peter closed his eyes.
A slight smile involuntarily crept onto his lips.
I feel quite relaxed.
He couldn't be bothered to think about where Oz was; he figured he'd see him soon enough.
It's not impossible to talk to it and clarify things later.
Peter took out his key, opened the door, and went inside.
"I'm back, Aunt May."
When Peter went inside, he found Aunt May sitting on the sofa watching television.
The television was broadcasting a news report at that moment.
Peter's eyes widened as he realized the news was about himself!
"This evening, a fire broke out at the Dessacs apartment building. A mysterious man rescued a mother and daughter trapped on the 10th floor... According to witnesses, the mysterious man was seen running along the walls..."
"I swear, this guy is definitely a lizardman, otherwise there's no reason for him to climb walls!"
"Dude, what are you talking about? Didn't he say he's Spider-Man?!"
beep—
Aunt Mei turned off the TV and couldn't help but say, "This world is too crazy. Where did this guy who can climb walls come from...?"
Peter asked, "Do you hate him?"
"How annoying?" Aunt Mei chuckled. "Silly child, he's just helping someone. I might need his help in the future..."
"Speaking of helping out..."
Aunt Mei narrowed her eyes. She suddenly smelled a burnt smell on her nephew's clothes.
Peter noticed Aunt May's gaze and immediately felt a chill run down his spine.
Surely Aunt May wouldn't have figured it out so easily?!
"Where are the eggs I ordered?" Aunt Mei suddenly asked.
Peter was stunned.
"I'm sorry... I..." He couldn't think of a reason to explain yet, but then he heard a knock on the door.
Peter frowned, puzzled, and wanted to see who it was.
As soon as the door was opened, a large black crow with an egg in its beak flew in.
"Gah!"
The crow placed the egg it was carrying on the table and then cawed loudly.
Oz spoke in a voice only Peter could hear.
"You forgot your eggs, Parker."
