Chapter 28: The Awakened Superman
Chapter 28: The Awakened Superman
"You're welcome, Mom. It's what I should do. You must be exhausted from the busy farm work these past few days."
Lucas smiled modestly.
Jonathan took Martha's hand and smiled, saying, "The child has really grown up."
Clark stood to the side, his face flushed.
He felt that he was perhaps really inferior to Lucas, and that he had never thought about this aspect before.
I couldn't help but admire Lucas.
Although she usually puts on a poker face that keeps strangers at bay, she always manages to help her family when it matters most.
Looking at myself, it seems I've never made any contribution.
Thinking about it this way, Da Chao suddenly felt that even the hamburger skin in his hand was a bit hard to chew.
"Woof woof woof."
"Woof woof..."
At this time.
Shelby, who was happily eating dog food, suddenly straightened his neck and started barking wildly towards the door.
"Shh, be quiet, Shelby."
Jonathan reached out and gestured, calling out to Shelby.
Shelby whimpered twice and wagged its tail at Jonathan. Although it stopped barking, it still emitted a low, threatening growl towards the door.
Jonathan frowned and slowly approached the door.
"Bang bang..."
"Bang bang bang..."
next moment.
A series of urgent knocks sounded on the door.
He gripped the doorknob and opened the door a crack.
"Hello, excuse me, I'm Jim Hopper, the sheriff of Hawkins, the town next door. Here's my badge."
The familiar voice he had heard in the Edgear store reached Lucas's ears.
Through the crack in the door, that face, which looked clearly sleep-deprived, reappeared in Lucas's sight.
Jonathan took the ID with suspicion, examined it for a few moments, and then handed it back to the other person: "Hello, Sheriff Hopper, what can I do for you?"
Jim Hopper quickly pulled a photograph from his pocket: "Sir, I'd like to ask you something. Have you seen this child? He went missing a few days ago, and someone said they saw him in the neighborhood."
The photo shows a quiet little boy, quite handsome, probably in his teens.
Jonathan looked very carefully, and after a long while, he shook his head: "I'm sorry, Sheriff, although I really want to help you, I have absolutely no recollection of this child."
"Okay, here's my contact information. Please contact me immediately if you have any leads."
Sheriff Hopper nodded, as if it were a routine check, and then left Kent Farm.
"What's wrong, Jonathan?" Martha looked at Jonathan, who had sat down again, with a curious expression.
"A child went missing in the next town. The sheriff there said someone had seen him in the area and came here specifically to inquire about him."
Jonathan explained briefly:
"It's a pity I never met that child, otherwise I might have been able to help him."
"What a poor child. His parents must be so worried right now," Ms. Martha sighed.
...
...
The autumn moon was clear and bright, like a thin layer of silver frost spreading over the town.
The cold, clear moonlight, carrying the chill of the night, spilled across the withered grass, the eaves of the old wooden houses, and the empty highway.
A grove of trees a few hundred meters from Highway 8.
The area is densely wooded, so even during the day, it receives almost no sunlight, and few people pass by; it is utterly desolate.
But tonight was different. A strange "buzzing" sound, similar to an electric current, suddenly rang out from deep within the woods.
The next moment, a monster covered in sticky skin and with twisted limbs leaped down from the treetop and crashed heavily onto the ground covered with fallen leaves.
Under the moonlight, the other person remained motionless, their head tilted to the side, and surprisingly, they had no facial features, only a mouth that looked like a flower petal opening and closing incessantly.
……
"Clark, when did you start liking Nietzsche's books?"
Inside the brothers' room.
After finishing his intense workout, Lucas took a nice shower and came back to find Clark engrossed in reading a book with a cover titled "NIETZSCHE," which was about 3 or 4 centimeters thick.
He had briefly browsed the book before; it was a good collection of philosophical ideas, and somewhat similar to a collection of poems.
The reason for the surprise is that the ideas in the book don't seem to align with the earnest advice Jonathan has been giving to Superman.
The book's central idea is to oppose traditional morality, believing that the essence of life is to expand, become stronger, and break through. It emphasizes the importance of releasing one's instincts, becoming a stronger version of oneself, rejecting all authority, and recognizing that one is one's own god!
There's a line in it that Lucas still remembers vividly:
The will to power is the fundamental law of all life!
This is completely contrary to the restraint, concealment, and control that Jonathan has always taught.
Upon hearing Lucas's words, Clark panicked.
"A classmate of mine said this book was good and asked me to borrow it."
He used to read this book secretly, but today he got so engrossed in an exciting part that he forgot to check the time, and his older brother happened to find him.
"Is that so? I've read this book too; it's indeed a very good read."
Lucas smiled faintly, then walked straight to his bedside:
"However, I suggest you check again tomorrow, because Dad will come over soon to see if we forgot to turn off the lights like we did the last few times."
"I'll get ready right away," Clark said quickly, then hurriedly put the book into his bag and turned off the light.
A gentle night breeze blew outside the window. Lucas put his arm under his head, thinking he would have a good dream tonight.
After all, for just fifteen dollars, he not only got fifteen 1/3-pound beef burgers, but also received praise from Ms. Martha.
But as soon as he lay down, he was awakened by a rustling sound.
In particular, the rustling sound became clearer and clearer.
Lucas decisively got out of bed, ready to go out, when he looked up and suddenly noticed that Clark on the upper bunk looked uncomfortable and was covering his ears tightly.
He patted Clark on the shoulder: "What's wrong with you?"
"I...I feel like my head is about to explode, there are so many sounds..."
Clark curled up in pain.
He felt as if countless loudspeakers were placed next to his ears.
The sounds of conversations, arguments, vehicles on the streets, animals moving in the distance, water flowing through pipes in the walls, the muffled thud of water hitting rocks in the ditch—even the faintest heartbeats…
All the sounds, without any filtering or buffering, flooded his head instantly like a burst dam, causing him to lose all control over his senses.
A thoughtful expression appeared on Lucas's face.
Clark has finally awakened his super hearing!
The pitiful cries quickly attracted Jonathan and Martha.
"Lucas, what's wrong with Clark?" Jonathan asked immediately.
Lucas gave a brief account.
"Clark, look at me, take a deep breath. You have to learn to control yourself, push those voices away, and only listen to what you want to hear."
Jonathan did not offer words of pity or comfort, but instead guided the conversation calmly, word by word.
Clark clenched his teeth and forced himself to take deep breaths.
A few seconds later.
The sharp roars and chaotic noises suddenly subsided and disappeared.
The distant sounds of cars, the neighbors' arguments, and the subtle noises in the soil gradually become blurred and distant, until they are completely cut off from perception.
The world has finally fallen silent.
Apart from the constant rushing sound moving towards them.
