Chapter 34 Clinics and Doctors
Chapter 34 Clinics and Doctors
"Thank you, Jaeger, just leave the things there."
"no problem."
Jaeger placed the file folder in the filing cabinet and closed the door behind him.
After finishing this task, Leslie forced him to sit at the desk. Looking at this doctor, who occasionally showed a tough demeanor, he pulled out a plate of cookies and a tea set from somewhere: "Alright, young man, have a cup of tea with the old man—you've been helping out at the clinic these past few days, thank you for your hard work."
Jaeger instinctively waved his hand: "No, no, no, I was just doing odd jobs, and you'll pay me for it, it's what I'm supposed to do."
"Furthermore, given your age, calling yourself an elderly person is quite inappropriate."
Leslie, who was pouring tea, laughed and said, "You're quite the smooth talker, Jaeger... Then I must invite you to join me for tea and refreshments. Trust me, you won't find cookies more delicious than these. They were made by a friend of mine who is a master baker."
Faced with such a warm invitation, Jaeger naturally wouldn't refuse: "Then I'll gladly accept, Dr. Leslie."
—A few days ago, Jaeger finally began to seriously consider the source of his money because he had taken in another snake, Burke.
According to Jaeger's online research, although Burks is a product of some kind of game, it is actually a type of hognose snake, just with a rather unusual pattern.
This snake's diet mainly consists of mice and frogs.
Of course, when Jaeger learned this, he was thinking, "Damn it, is it too late to get Otis Frynigan out of prison now?"
After all, rat catchers don't sound like they'd be short of rats.
Getting back to the main point, making money is definitely not difficult for Jaeger, after all, he knows magic, and at worst he can become an exorcist or something.
In addition, Pingo's unique streaming mechanism and regional hotspot module are much better than manually posting small ads on the streets.
So Jaeger simply used that account to post a tweet, basically saying he was a rookie detective, offering all kinds of services for a fee, he could do anything, even paranormal cases, and his motto was "I'll take anyone who comes."
But probably because they didn't know what image to use, they took a picture of a Burke snake to represent the lucky snake...
Jaeger hasn't received any official commissions yet, but a bunch of reptile enthusiasts and snake keepers have been following him.
...Is this right? I'm not being mistaken for some abstract person who uses tweets, am I? Do they actually think I'm a pet blogger?
However, since Jaeger had not received any commissions, he simply took the initiative to go to the clinic next door to inquire if there were any jobs available to assist doctors.
As it turned out, Leslie did indeed have a similar need.
Rather, she had been looking for an assistant to help move medicine boxes and organize documents at the clinic for a while. But while it was easy to recruit criminals in Crime Alley, it was difficult to find a decent assistant. Moreover, there was no guarantee that the person wasn't just pretending to be an assistant but actually there to steal medicine or money from the clinic.
But then Jaeger appeared, and at least Batman was monitoring... no, vouching for him. There was simply no one more suitable than him!
They hit it off immediately, which is why Jaeger is now an assistant at the Tompkins Clinic.
"By the way, Dr. Leslie."
Drinking tea is always a good time for casual conversation. Warm tea and crispy biscuits make people relax and unconsciously talk more.
And that's exactly what Jaeger is saying now: "I've never asked you before, why did you choose to open a clinic in Crime Alley?"
Leslie was sipping her tea when she heard this, and then she couldn't help but smile: "Many people have asked me the same question."
"Young man, look outside. What do you see?"
Following Leslie's gaze, Jaeger looked towards the clinic's entrance: "Uh, I see Crime Alley...?"
"More or less," Rice said in a gentle but unyielding tone. "Crime Alley is the worst place in Gotham, in my opinion, without a doubt."
"Ever since the tragedy that took Thomas and Martha away, this place has rapidly declined, or rather... fallen into ruin."
"The people here are mostly criminals, and most of the people who grow up here end up becoming criminals as well."
"So when I first arrived here fifteen years ago, I was convinced from the bottom of my heart—"
Leslie said softly, "This is the most hopeless place in a hopeless city."
"..." Jaeger fell silent.
He unconsciously stroked Burx's snake scales, causing the good-natured snake to secretly roll its eyes: "So, why did you choose this place?"
"I ask you," Leslie countered, "would you go and help a place you know is beyond saving?"
"You know perfectly well that the money you donate will be pocketed by greedy politicians in this place, the people you desperately help turn around and shoot you, the place you want to build is destroyed in the crossfire of a criminal gang, and your determination is treated as worthless by everyone..."
"Can you still muster the courage to persevere, convinced that you can find something different in this mire of evil?"
