Chapter 308: The Cycle of Fate
Chapter 308: The Cycle of Fate
The sky was ablaze, the entire universe seemed to be torn apart, a majestic palace collapsed in the distance, and countless figures roared and struggled in the flames.
In the heart of this destruction, he saw a familiar yet unfamiliar figure.
—It was himself.
But this "Ares" did not look at him. Instead, he slowly raised his hand, and a beam of black light shot out from his palm, shattering a temple that was floating in the air.
"Time has come to an end."
His voice was deep and cold, as if it had traversed countless reincarnations.
Ares's heart clenched. He tried to move forward, but a tremendous force pulled him back to reality. Gasping for breath, he returned to the interior of the Time Tombstone, where Selena and Wagner watched him anxiously.
"What happened to you just now? You suddenly froze for almost two minutes!" Selena's voice was filled with anxiety.
Ares did not answer; his fingers trembled slightly as the image of himself—the "self" that destroyed the world—remained in his mind.
“We can’t delay any longer.” He took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing the shock in his heart. “Keep moving forward and find the core of the Time Tombstone.”
They eventually reached the deepest part of the tombstone, where they discovered an ancient information storage device that was still functioning.
Selena quickly accessed the system, read the data, and a line of cold text appeared on the screen:
Time Fragment: w-001
The sixth collapse of the cosmic main cycle
Executor: Ares, the Fatebreaker
The entire room fell into a deathly silence instantly.
Selena's lips trembled slightly, Wagner's face froze, while Ares stood motionless, his eyes flashing with intense emotions.
“…That’s impossible.” Selena’s voice trembled as she spoke. “This database was created…before we were born.”
Wagner swallowed hard. "In other words... it says here that Ares has destroyed the universe six times?"
Ares's fist clenched slightly as the illusion from earlier flashed through his mind—the version of himself that destroyed the world.
If this is true... then it means that he was once the terminator of the universe, and their current journey may just be an endless cycle.
“Ares,” Selena said softly, her eyes filled with complex emotions, “If this were true… what would you do?”
Ares was silent for a moment, then finally spoke slowly: "That's not important."
Wagner was taken aback: "What?"
Ares slowly raised his head, his gaze sharp as a knife: "What matters is the choice we make now. Whatever the past may have been, I will not allow any of this to happen again."
He turned around and looked into the depths of the tombstone of time, at the core device that was still trembling softly, his eyes burning with an unprecedented determination.
"We must find the truth."
"Then, end this cycle completely."
Timeline: The sixth collapse of the universe's main cycle
Recorder: Unknown
Event Description: Executor Ares Fatebreaker has triggered the reboot mechanism again, and the universe has entered a new cycle... Warning: The current main storyline has gone off track, and the Executor may break through the inherent causality.
Ares remained standing there, silent.
Black text appeared on the holographic screen before him, like some kind of cosmic judgment, nailing him to the endless cycle of history. He felt a chill spread from his spine to his limbs—this was not a simple record, but more like a…curse of fate.
Selena's voice quickly brought him back to reality; her tone was clearly urgent: "How is this possible? If the universe has already cycled six times, why doesn't anyone remember?"
Wagner, on the other hand, was unusually agitated, slamming his fist against the wall: "This is some kind of fucking scam, isn't it? Just like those 'spirals of fate,' they're all tricks that make people doubt themselves."
But Ares knew this wasn't a scam.
Because in some corner of his consciousness, memories that shouldn't belong to him are slowly reviving. Those blurry images, destruction, restart, choices... are like an endless corridor, each time leading to the same ending, but this time, he vaguely senses—something is different.
“We must move forward,” he said calmly, his eyes so cold they seemed to pierce through the darkness.
Selena cracked the storage core's access in less than a minute. With a series of commands input, a hidden door slowly opened. Behind the door was a long corridor swallowed by darkness, the air filled with the smell of oxidized metal, and an even more indescribable, strange fluctuation, as if the entire corridor existed outside of time.
Their footsteps echoed eerily in the empty corridor.
“Can you feel it…” Wagner lowered his voice, “This doesn’t feel like ruins, it feels more like… some kind of trap.”
Ares did not answer. His attention was drawn to the door at the end, which glowed with a pale blue light. The runes engraved on the door looked familiar; he had seen them before—in the ruins of the Spiral of Fate, at the core of the rift, in those places once thought to be the origin of the laws of the universe.
However, there is one difference in detail.
A crack appeared on the door.
“This rune…” Selena murmured as she traced the engravings on the door with her fingers, “is arranged in reverse.”
“What do you mean?” Wagner frowned.
“If this is part of the spiral of fate, then it should follow the standard cosmic order. But the runes here are mirrored.” Selena took a deep breath and looked up. “That means… what’s behind this door might be something that contradicts the fundamental laws of the universe.”
Without hesitation, Ares reached out and placed his hand on the door.
hiss--
A strange fluctuation emanated from his palm, and his consciousness seemed to be dragged into an endless void.
In the darkness, a voice whispered.
"You've finally arrived."
Ares frowned. He could sense that this was not some kind of mechanical recording, but rather a genuine consciousness communicating with him.
"You have defied destiny."
"But you're not strong enough."
A blurry image appeared before his eyes—a figure shrouded in shadow, without features or expression, yet radiating an almost suffocating sense of oppression.
"Who are you?" Ares asked coldly.
"I am your projection."
The figure slowly moved forward, and Ares finally saw it clearly—it looked exactly like him, but its eyes were empty and its aura was cold, as if it were a “Ares” who had completely lost his emotions.
Selena and Wagner's voices echoed in the distance, but Ares could not respond. He was trapped in this dark realm of consciousness, face to face with this "self."
"You have made a different choice."
"But you are still trapped in the cage of fate."
"If you want to break the cycle—"
