Chapter 269: The Battle of Awakening
Chapter 269: The Battle of Awakening
On that planet corrupted by rift energy, the Guardian team faced an unprecedented crisis. Countless crystalline lifeforms surged from the surface and rock strata, their forms bizarre and varied, each seemingly having evolved its own distinct characteristics. Some were incredibly fast, capable of scaling rock walls at lightning speed, while others were cumbersome yet possessed indestructible shells. Most dangerous were the energy fluctuations within the cores of these crystalline creatures, emitting piercing screams that disrupted the rhythm of the entire battlefield.
Ares swiftly swung his rune sword, unleashing scorching blades of light that cleaved through the oncoming crystalline creatures. They disintegrated during the attack, but the shattered pieces reformed on the rock face, becoming even more complex.
“These things are impossible to kill!” Wagner roared, smashing the enemies in front of him with his massive battle axe, but he soon discovered that the destroyed crystals quickly reassembled and became even more troublesome.
Selena, hiding behind a boulder, calmly observed the battlefield. "Their core hasn't been destroyed! We must find their real weakness, or we'll just be wasting our energy!"
Ares, panting heavily, plunged his rune sword into the ground, managing to gain a brief moment of respite. He closed his eyes, focusing his mind on sensing the energy flow of these crystalline creatures. He could feel that the energy of the rift not only gave them life but also granted them almost limitless regenerative abilities.
“Their core energy comes from underground.” Ares suddenly opened his eyes and told his teammates about this discovery. “As long as the core is still there, these crystalline creatures will regenerate indefinitely! We must go deep underground and destroy their energy source.”
Wagner brandished his battle axe, forcing back the surrounding enemies. "What are we waiting for? Let's go down and take care of their lair!"
Selena quickly adjusted her sniper rifle, her eyes scanning the surroundings warily. "Going down is fine, but we need a plan. These things are clearly trying to lure us into their core area; who knows what else awaits us there?"
Ares gripped his rune sword tightly, his tone resolute, "Whatever lies below, we must try. The universe can no longer withstand such a threat."
The three quickly broke through the crystalline creatures' encirclement and, guided by the star map, found a fissure passage leading underground. The fissure emitted a faint purple light, and a low, rumbling sound could be faintly heard from its depths, as if some enormous being was waiting deep underground.
Upon entering the rift, they found themselves in an underground cavern filled with crystal pillars. These pillars soared into the clouds, each shimmering with the energy of the rift, forming a vast network of energy. A deep, resonant sound emanated from the depths of the cavern, a sound that directly shook their very souls.
“This place doesn’t look like it was formed naturally,” Selena said in a low voice, scanning the surroundings with her sniper rifle and discovering that the energy flow between the crystal pillars was extremely complex.
“This might be the lair of the Rift Variant.” Ares walked at the front, his rune sword resonating slightly, seemingly repelling these energies in some way.
“If this is a lair, then the core must be deep inside.” Wagner swung his battle axe, smashing the crystal pillars blocking his path. “Let’s charge in and take it down!”
However, just as they stepped deeper into the cave, the crystal pillars suddenly began to glow, and the entire space was enveloped in intense energy fluctuations. Countless crystalline lifeforms separated from the pillars, their numbers more than ten times greater than before, directly blocking the guardians' retreat.
"It's a trap!" Selena shouted, and opened fire immediately. Her energy blasts accurately struck the oncoming crystalline creature core, but the number of enemies far exceeded their capacity to withstand the attack.
Ares wielded his rune sword, desperately trying to fend off the endless stream of enemies. He felt each swing draining his power, while the crystalline lifeforms seemed inexhaustible.
“At this rate, we’ll be worn down!” Wagner roared, his battle axe already scorching hot, clearly from overuse.
“We need to find the energy core!” Ares shouted, his gaze sweeping across the cave and finally locking onto a glowing crystal pillar—the center of the pillar radiating a stronger energy fluctuation than the rest.
"That pillar is the core!" Ares pointed at the target. "We must destroy it!"
The three rushed towards the energy pillar, but the sheer number of crystalline lifeforms was overwhelming, requiring them to exert all their strength to clear a path at almost every step. As they finally approached the pillar, a gigantic crystalline lifeform emerged from it. Its form was completely different from the previous creatures; it was enormous, with limbs as sharp as blades, and a constantly rotating energy core embedded in its chest.
“These are guardians…” Selena said in a low voice, her expression turning serious. “These variants have even evolved combat forms specifically designed to protect the core.”
Wagner licked his lips, raised his battle axe, and said, "Let's take it down first, then deal with the core!"
The colossal guardian roared and charged at them, its speed disproportionate to its size, each attack carrying terrifying power. Wagner rushed forward to confront it head-on, but was quickly blasted away, his battle axe nearly slipping from his grasp.
"This guy is too strong!" Wagner coughed up blood and stood up again. "We must join forces to deal with it."
"Wagner will draw its attention, Selena will provide cover, and I'll destroy its core!" Ares quickly devised the strategy, his gaze resolute. "We only have one chance!"
Wagner nodded and charged at the enemy again, swinging his battle axe. He overwhelmed the guardian with his ferocious attacks, while Selena, hiding behind cover, precisely targeted its limb joints with her sniper rifle.
Taking advantage of the enemy's distraction, Ares swiftly circled behind the Guardian. He concentrated all his power, pushing the rune sword's light to its limit, then aimed at the Guardian's core and thrust it down fiercely.
As the runic sword pierced its core, the colossal guardian let out a agonizing roar. Its body began to crack, releasing energy that illuminated the entire cavern. The guardians quickly retreated, avoiding the impending explosion.
"Run!" Ares shouted. As they rushed out of the cave, the energy pillar behind them collapsed with a roar, and the entire nest began to crumble.
When the three of them finally escaped danger and stood on the surface of the planet, they looked at the light gushing out of the distant cave and breathed a sigh of relief.
"We did it." Selena wiped the sweat from her forehead, her voice tinged with exhaustion.
“It’s only temporary.” Ares gripped his rune sword, his gaze fixed on the distant starry sky. “This is just a remnant of the rift. We must become stronger to meet the challenges ahead.”
Wagner laughed and patted him on the shoulder. "Kid, you did a great job. Don't worry, with us here, these things won't cause any trouble!"
However, just when they thought the crisis was temporarily averted, the observer's voice came from the star map: "Guardians, new variants have begun to spread in other dimensions. You must gather more power as soon as possible, otherwise, the balance of the universe will collapse once again."
Ares took a deep breath and nodded. "We will not allow the universe to fall into crisis. The era of the Rift is over, and we will prevent its resurgence."
The three departed the planet with renewed awareness, but behind them, the remnants of the rift's power were quietly brewing a far greater conspiracy. The future of the universe remained shrouded in the shadow of the unknown.
