Chapter 540 The Role of Experimental Subjects
Chapter 540 The Role of Experimental Subjects
The piercing alarm echoed wildly within the enormous "morgue".
Sewage dripping from the cracks in the dome mingled with scorching steam leaking from the energy pipes, forming patches of foul-smelling mud on the ground. The metal structures that once carried dreams now lay like tombstones swept by a storm, leaning precariously. The pale bodies bound to them, like abandoned, broken dolls, swayed and fell helplessly in the tremors, silently proclaiming the complete failure of the plan.
However, Tang Zijun did not react much to the scene before her.
These bodies, these "empty shells" that have lost consciousness but whose physiological functions have not completely ceased, are not worthless waste. They embody the highest achievements of biotechnology and are near-perfect biological containers. Although consciousness has disappeared, they possess immeasurable strategic value—whether as medical resources, biological samples, or... for other purposes.
"Sorlin, how much longer?"
"Don't rush. Breaking through the Church of the Epoch's network defenses is no easy task, not to mention the support of the Epoch Gods."
Suolin was placed on top of the black core by Yedi, and the broken end of her neck emitted an eerie light that echoed the light within the black core.
The mechanical eyes blinked incessantly, the core processor was running at overclock, and several thin data probes popped out from under her neck, piercing a nearby data interface that was not completely damaged with the precision of living things. Data streams on the screen were frantically scrolling like a waterfall.
"What exactly do you want to do?"
Leisen abruptly turned his head, his eyes fixed on Tang Zijun, then swept over the bodies that looked like tattered dolls, and a chill instantly shot up his spine to his head.
"Don't tell me you want to do these weird things too. These experiments are no joke. Even the most insane scholars in the wasteland wouldn't do something so blasphemous to the dead."
"You're overthinking it," Tang Zijun's voice interrupted Lei Sen.
He didn't look at Leisen; his gaze remained fixed on the pale bodies swaying in the tremors. "I've said it before, the gods of the era have gone down the wrong path, and I certainly won't do the same thing as them."
He paused, as if organizing his thoughts for more precise language. "The consciousness of these test subjects has dissipated, but these bodies are still useful; they cannot be wasted here."
"What do you mean?" Lei Sen was taken aback, seemingly not understanding the meaning behind Tang Zijun's words.
Tang Zijun didn't offer much explanation. Whether it was the dream world or the real world, it was something that Leisen, a scavenger, couldn't understand, even if he was a legendary scavenger.
Explaining these things to him is too troublesome; it can't be explained in just a few words, and the current environment isn't the place to discuss these matters.
"Tang Zijun, I've got this sorted out!"
Just then, Suolin's voice came from not far away.
"Hehehe, as expected of me, even such a complex system was breached in such a short time!"
"You should thank that person outside. If she hadn't blocked the signals from the gods of the era, it wouldn't have been so easy for you to copy this information." Tang Zijun glanced at Suolin, then suddenly raised the black card that exuded a dark aura high.
"Next, it's my turn."
The card suddenly lit up, and then, a cold, deathly energy, as if from the deepest depths of the netherworld, erupted from the card like a giant beast awakening.
hum!
An invisible wave spread instantly; it was not a physical impact, but a cold awakening that acted on the very essence of life.
This energy contained no warmth or vitality, but rather a coercive force bearing the mark of the underworld. Like an invisible tide, it precisely swept over the dozens of metal objects closest to Tang Zijun that were not yet completely destroyed!
A miracle, or rather, a nightmare, occurred.
Those bodies, originally as pale and lifeless as wax figures, instantly transformed the necromantic energy that swept over them.
It suddenly trembled.
The stiff fingers twitched slightly.
The tightly closed eyelids slowly opened.
The muscles that were originally relaxed tensed up instantly under the power of the undead.
Then, from deep within the throats of these bodies came a strange, unintelligible "ho...ho." sound, like rusty gears grinding together! Crack!
The alloy restraints binding them snapped like fragile paper strips under the superhuman strength driven by the power of the undead! One after another, pale, cold bodies, but now full of eerie vitality, were suddenly pulled up from the tilting metal as if manipulated by invisible strings.
Their movements were slightly stiff, carrying an inhuman, purely energy-driven mechanical feel. Their eyes opened, and deep within their pupils no longer shone with human brilliance, but instead burned two points of ghostly blue flames, like will-o'-the-wisps.
The light was cold and hollow, yet it carried a profound indifference towards the world of the living.
Yedi, who was closest to the scene, was startled by the sight and stood still, too afraid to move. Leisen, on the other hand, tensed up as if his tail had been stepped on and immediately drew his gun, aiming it at the "corpses" that had stood up again.
Dozens of eyes burning with ghostly blue flames turned in unison towards Tang Zijun under the frantically flashing red and blue lights of the alarm, like the most loyal soldiers from the underworld awaiting their king's command.
The entire core area of the laboratory instantly fell into an even more eerie and chilling silence than before, and even the violent buzzing of the energy core seemed to pause for a moment.
"This, this is...!" Leisen's eyes widened, almost bursting, his gaze fixed on Tang Zijun, his voice trembling with pain. "You, what did you do!? What have you done!?"
The scene before him was far beyond his comprehension. He had seen the most ferocious mutated beasts in the wasteland and the most fanatical believers in the church, but he had never seen anything like this... a walking corpse driven by a strange power.
A primal, biological fear and loathing of non-human beings gripped his heart instantly. He instinctively took two steps back, his hand holding the gun trembling slightly.
"This is exactly what you've been missing all along."
"What?" Leisen was stunned for a moment.
Then he suddenly recalled the moment when he first met the person in front of him, when they had talked about something that the world was missing.
Tang Zijun turned her head and looked at Lei Sen. "In a world of pure matter, there is no extraordinary energy, true qi, magic, or any other words you can use to describe this power... but now you see, this is what this world lacks."
"...Is the legend true?" Leisen opened his mouth, although his years of experience told him that it must not be true, but the scene in front of him kept challenging his worldview.
Looking at the group of "resurrected" bodies around him, and then at Tang Zijun who was controlling all of this, Lei Sen didn't know what to say for a moment.
It's not that no one can manipulate corpses. A professor specializing in nanotechnology once accomplished something similar, except he used nanorobots instead of flesh and blood to achieve the goal of manipulating corpses.
But at best, he was just recreating a "robot" based on a corpse, which was completely different from the power that Tang Zijun was currently displaying.
Just then, Tang Zijun suddenly sensed something, her gaze abruptly shifting to a certain direction, her eyes seemingly piercing through the walls to see outside. "Wh-what's wrong?" Lei Sen noticed Tang Zijun's reaction and quickly asked.
Tang Zijun's expression was somewhat complicated, and her eyes narrowed slightly. "The battle is about to end."
"The battle is about to end... Hey, what do you mean by that?"
But at this moment, Tang Zijun had no time to answer Leisen. He quickly shielded Yedi and Suolin, whispering, "Hold on to whatever's around us, the big one is coming!"
Before the words were even finished, a blinding white light instantly engulfed all the red and blue police lights.
The violent energy turbulence swept in like a solid wall, tearing apart the originally hard metal walls like fragile pieces of paper in an instant, and the entire tower let out a wail.
boom!!
A destructive torrent crashed down upon us!
The violent energy and physical impact engulfed the entire laboratory like a tsunami. In a dizzying moment, everyone's vision was filled with blinding light and tumbling debris, and all they could hear was the destructive roar and the shrill screams of collapsing spatial structures.
