Chapter 11: The Operation Begins
Chapter 11: The Operation Begins
Although we're about to get started, as the saying goes, sharpening your axe won't delay your work.
Lu Chen wasn't in a hurry to eliminate the zombies. He currently had five zombies at his disposal, two of which were of the robust type and three of the ordinary type.
The number isn't large, but if each one is armed to the teeth, their combat effectiveness can be increased to another level.
The first issue to be addressed is weapons.
He only had one kitchen knife at home, which he had already given to Dazhuang, but that doesn't mean other people don't have one.
The zombies on the entire floor have been cleared out, and all the doors to the rooms have been pried open. You can take whatever you want from the six apartments.
Lu Chen led Shen Qingci, searching room by room.
He found two knives in the kitchen of the young couple in apartment 502.
One is a stainless steel kitchen knife for cutting vegetables, with a very sharp blade and a wooden handle that feels nice in the hand. The other is a smaller multi-purpose knife with serrations, which can be used for both cutting and slicing.
The programmer's room in room 503 didn't have many things, but there was a kitchen knife in the kitchen. It was a lightweight type with a thin blade, which made it easy to wield.
What truly caught Lu Chen's eye was apartment 505—the apartment where Tie Zhu lived.
On the knife rack in the kitchen, there was a watermelon knife that was nearly half a meter long stuck in the ground.
Lu Chen pulled it out and weighed it in his hand. The blade was made of stainless steel, with a shallow curve on the back, and the edge was very sharp.
The handle is made of black plastic with the anti-slip texture still on. Using this thing to chop watermelons is a waste of its potential, but it would be an absolute weapon for slaying zombies.
"Good stuff." He planned to give this knife to Tie Zhu; the greater the strength, the more powerful the weapon would be.
After searching around, they found a total of 7 usable knives. Adding the kitchen knife in Dazhuang's hand, that makes a total of 8.
Five zombies, fully equipped with all their gear and still some left over.
Weapons are taken care of, but armor is not to be neglected.
Scarves, thick sweaters, and cotton-padded coats—these were the winter clothes that Lu Chen had previously searched in the rooms on the fifth floor. He put them on the five zombies one by one.
The neck is a key area for protection, and each zombie was wrapped with at least two layers of cloth. Those with strong physiques like Tiezhu and Dazhuang had several more layers of thick cloth padded on their chests and backs, which were particularly effective against the zombies' claws and teeth.
Shen Qingci watched from the side. At first, she stood up, but later she simply squatted down to help.
She folded a scarf into two layers, wrapped it around the neck of an ordinary zombie, and tied a knot tightly. Her movements weren't very skillful, but she was very serious.
"Have you ever done something like this before?" Lu Chen asked casually.
"I dressed the models," Shen Qingci said without looking up, "at the company's annual meeting, when setting up the venue."
Lu Chen fell silent for a moment. Those ordinary, mundane days before the apocalypse would probably never return.
After being fully armed, the five zombies stood in a row.
They were carrying kitchen knives and watermelon knives, wearing scarves around their necks and thick winter clothes.
Although it looks incongruous, the sense of oppression is already taking shape.
Lu Chen, along with five zombies and Shen Qingci, arrived at the fire escape door.
The fire escape door was still locked; he had previously wrapped a nylon rope around the doorknob several times and tied a knot that wouldn't come off.
Behind the door is a staircase leading up and down; based on previous assessments, there should be zombies inside.
"I'll scout ahead!"
Before Lu Chen could even speak, Shen Qingci took the initiative to speak.
She walked to the fire door, faced the door panel, and closed her eyes.
Lu Chen stood beside her, very close, and he could feel an extremely subtle energy emanating from Shen Qingci.
The feeling was hard to describe; it wasn't wind, nor heat, but more like a silent ripple spreading outwards from her. Unless you were standing right next to her, you wouldn't even notice it.
A few seconds later, Shen Qingci opened her eyes.
"There are a total of 5 zombies on the entire fire escape staircase."
Her tone was calm, as if she were giving a routine work report: "Two are at the entrance on the first floor, and the remaining three are on the seventh, ninth, and thirteenth floors respectively."
She paused, then added more details.
"Four male zombies and one female zombie. There's also a particularly strong male zombie, about the same size as Big Zhuang!"
After listening, Lu Chen couldn't help but exclaim, "Impressive!"
He was genuinely praising it.
If he were to obtain this intelligence himself, he would have to send zombies out to scout ahead, which would be time-consuming and laborious, and could easily alert the enemy.
Shen Qingci simply closed his eyes for a few seconds, and he had all the information in his hands.
With this intelligence, we have complete confidence in taking action.
"That's nothing special." Shen Qingci shook her head. "I can only take a look. As for how to deal with them, that's up to you."
Seeing that the other party was capable and humble, Lu Chen was even more satisfied.
He didn't say anything more, and went forward to untie the nylon rope tied to the fire door handle.
Then he pushed open the door and let Dazhuang, Tiezhu, and the other four zombies walk out one by one.
After all the zombies had entered the fire escape, Lu Chen closed the door again and wrapped the rope back around.
"It's still not very safe here!" He glanced back at the fire door and said, "If a fight breaks out, this door could be broken down. Your room is closer, let's go to your side."
Shen Qingci hadn't expected that Lu Chen, who already controlled five zombies and held such a significant advantage, would still act with such caution.
But she didn't see it as cowardice.
On the contrary, she felt that she had not made the wrong choice.
The scariest thing in the apocalypse isn't how strong the zombies are, but getting carried away.
Those who think they are invincible because they have awakened superpowers and run rampant everywhere are often the ones who die the fastest. Only those who remain vigilant at all times and leave themselves a way out at every step can survive longer in the dangerous apocalypse.
The two walked back to room 506 down the corridor. Lu Chen closed the door, sat down on the sofa in the living room, and then closed his eyes.
Possessing Da Zhuang, the perspective shifts.
Lu Chen controlled Da Zhuang to stand in the fire escape staircase. He raised his hand and tapped the stair railing with the back of his knife.
The sound of metal clashing echoed in the narrow fire escape staircase, spreading up and down the stairwell.
One, two, three, the rhythm was even, like some kind of signal.
After the sound was heard, the zombies downstairs were the first to move.
The first sound was heavy, hurried footsteps on the first floor. Then came the one on the seventh floor, followed by the one on the ninth floor, and finally the one on the thirteenth floor.
Footsteps from different distances and starting points converged on the fifth floor from all directions.
The one on the seventh floor was the first to arrive.
It rushed down from upstairs, saw Dazhuang at the corner, immediately slowed down, stared at Dazhuang with its gray-white eyes for two seconds, made a low hoarse sound in its throat, and then stood quietly to the side.
Then there's the one on the ninth floor, and the two on the first floor.
Four zombies gathered on the fifth-floor platform, huddled together, and made a series of hoarse noises.
They looked at Dazhuang, then at Tiezhu and Aunt Wang, and after confirming that they were all of the same kind, they stopped making any further attacks.
Except for the last one to arrive.
The male zombie was about the same size as Da Zhuang, with broad shoulders and muscles on his arms that made his short-sleeved shirt bulge.
It ran down from the thirteenth floor, much faster than a normal zombie.
Moreover, after reaching the fifth-floor platform, it did not quiet down like the other zombies, but stared at Dazhuang and let out a low growl.
