Chapter 55 He is not a demon
Chapter 55 He is not a demon
The king traced a pale golden magic circle in the air with his finger, attempting to analyze the essence of the energy in the sky.
The magic array shattered the moment it touched the area around the Holy Lord. It didn't seem like it was attacked, but rather like it was rejected. The magic array set up by the King was rejected by the Holy Lord's aura.
"That's not right."
Wang squinted at the Holy Lord, who was still absorbing the nuclear bomb's energy, a cold sweat breaking out on his back: "The essence of magic is the art of borrowing; we borrow power from other dimensions and operate it according to our consciousness."
"But this person in front of me doesn't seem to be borrowing anything. He's absorbing it, absorbing the power of the nuclear bomb. Judging from the magical aura emanating from him, his magic originates from himself; it's his own power!"
Another nuclear bomb appeared on the eastern horizon, but this time the Holy Lord did not choose to wait in place.
He raised one hand, and the runes of the Dragon Talisman appeared in his hand. A beam of yellow light shot out from his palm, and the nuclear bomb disintegrated five kilometers away. The outer shell melted, leaving only the core exposed to the air. It then transformed into a stream of pure energy and flew towards the Holy Lord's hand.
The dragon talisman shone even brighter.
"He's here, eating!"
A thought surfaced in his mind, sending shivers down his spine: "Nuclear bombs are just food to him!"
Confirming this suspicion sent a chill down his spine. He had read a sentence in the documents he had collected in the Sanctuary that he hadn't paid much attention to at the time.
The real danger lies not in the creatures wielding immense power, but in those who treat that destructive power as a daily consumable.
The man standing before me now belongs to the latter category.
The queen's body moved backward uncontrollably, and the portal behind her closed silently.
In the library of Kamar-Taj, the king practically rushed towards the section of ancient books, his fingers flying across the rows of bookshelves. Finally, he stopped in front of a forbidden book called "Illustrated Compendium of Other Dimensional Lords".
Wang turned the pages of the book, his fingers trembling as he flipped to the chapter marked "Demon."
Names like Dormammu and Mephisto flashed before his eyes, but none of the descriptions of these demons matched the man who had devoured the nuclear bomb.
Wang could feel the huge weight that had been pressing on his heart finally lifted.
"The 'Illustrated Compendium of Dimensional Lords' won't miss anything, so we can at least be sure he's not a demon." Wang breathed a sigh of relief. "Since he's not a demon, there's no need to tell the Ancient One. There's no need to make him worry about mortal matters."
After Shendu absorbed the last nuclear bomb, the Dragon Talisman lit up completely, and magma-like patterns appeared on its surface. Shendu absorbed the Dragon Talisman into his body and let out a satisfied groan.
He descended from the sky, and invisible flames formed a staircase beneath his feet, distorting the surrounding air with intense heat.
Wanda stepped forward, knelt on one knee, and said with undisguised fervor, "Congratulations, Master!"
The Holy Lord looked down at her, his golden vertical pupils reflecting Wanda's devout face: "Not very well done, Wanda."
Wanda hurriedly shook her head: "No, Master, you gave me the chance to take revenge. This is just what I should do."
"Master, what should we do next? Should we wipe out Director Fury and his team from S.H.I.E.L.D." Wanda asked.
The Holy Lord waved his hand: "Don't take action against them yet. Fury's identity still includes at least the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D., so keeping him around is still useful for now."
"Chief, is this a dead end? Is our only option to launch a final counterattack?" Hawkeye wiped his bow, checking how many arrows he had left.
Natasha and Steve stood beside Fury with their heads down, seemingly lost in thought.
"Chief, perhaps we still have a chance."
After a moment of thought, Steve said, "I've heard of an organization called the Sanctuary. They learn magic and might pose a threat to the Holy Lord."
Fury looked at Steve: "It does exist there, but I don't know if they'd welcome us now."
"We should at least give it a try, shouldn't we?" Natasha said from the side.
The morning bells of Kamar-Taj have already tolled three times, and the King has been sitting in the library all night.
There were three books in front of him: "Overview of Extradimensional Energy", "The Origin of Magic", and "Illustrated Guide to Extradimensional Lords". Wang had written dense notes on all three books.
"No, none of them are right." Wang shook his head and rubbed his dry eyes, looking at the three hypotheses he had come up with that night.
Hypothesis 1: The Holy Lord is an unrecorded lord from another dimension.
The claim has been overturned. The book "The Encyclopedia of Dimensional Lords" was written by the Ancient One, the Sorcerer Supreme, and it is impossible for any lord not to be recorded.
Hypothesis 2: The Holy Lord possesses some kind of lost ancient magic, which allows him to convert external energy into his own magical power.
After being overthrown, the king searched through all the ancient magic documents in Kamar-Taj, but found that the absorption efficiency of all the magic was far less than that shown by Shendu at the time.
Hypothesis 3: The Holy Lord himself is a mobile energy source, and the nuclear bomb is just the trigger that activates the potential energy within the Holy Lord.
Undetermined. This is the hypothesis that Wang currently favors, but there is another terrifying possibility in this hypothesis: that the Holy Lord's body contains energy far exceeding that of a nuclear bomb.
Wang's fingers rubbed against the "Illustrated Compendium of Other Dimensional Lords," and the conclusion he reached after a whole night was the same as the initial one.
"Not a demon. The few words confirm that it's not a demon." Wang repeated this conclusion in a low voice, trying to convince himself.
He didn't notice a pool of liquid, darker than the shadows, in the corner of the room, which disappeared after he finished speaking.
Wang looked out at the morning light. This speculation was even more terrifying than the idea that the Holy Lord was a demon. There were no records of him, no information about his weaknesses, and no references.
Is Kamar-Taj magic effective against such beings?
Wang recalled his shattered magic circle; the Holy Lord's aura negated his magic—this power was terrifying.
Wang closed the spellbook, stood up, his knees making a slight scraping sound; he needed to see the Ancient One.
But he suppressed the thought as soon as it came to mind.
The Ancient One is currently dealing with friction with the boundary of the Dark Dimension. Dormammu's activities have become increasingly frequent, and as the Sorcerer Supreme, he cannot extricate himself from the situation.
Furthermore, Shendu's current actions appear to be under control; he has only targeted S.H.I.E.L.D. and has not attacked civilians.
Wang, as if possessed, opened an inconspicuous handbook, which contained a record of the people who had recently visited the area.
The vast majority were apprentices of Kamar-Taj, with a few ordinary people who stumbled upon the place by chance.
Steve Rossger (Captain America) and his four companions inquire about the location of the Sanctum Sanctorum and how to contact it.
Result: Rejected.
Wang frowned. What did S.H.I.E.L.D. want from them now? Did they want to use them to deal with Shendu? But the Sanctum Sanctorum had no reason to intervene, or rather, they didn't care about matters between mortals.
