Chapter 96 Pirate Crew? Tutoring Class!
Chapter 96 Pirate Crew? Tutoring Class!
"Shh—!" Danitz lunged forward and covered Lorne's mouth, nervously glancing around. Only after confirming there were no other sailors on deck did he release him, lowering his voice to say, "Let me explain..."
"Uh." Lorne didn't make any move, just looked at him with a speechless expression.
After confirming again that no one was looking over, Danitz spoke:
"If I didn't say that, how would the captain and the others believe that I teamed up with a complete stranger to kill 'Claw,' then got chased down together, and then got tweezers... cough cough, anyway, the starting point of all this mess was just a card game..."
Do you think anyone will believe that?
In reality, Danitz was thinking... I can't very well say that I was tricked by a newbie, that would be too embarrassing. If word got out, how could he, "Blazing Flame," maintain his reputation at sea?
"Then where will I live?" Lorne was too lazy to expose him.
"Come with me." He pulled Lorne into the cabin and led him to a small cubicle in the living quarters. "You'll live here. The other sailors here are all my men."
"So you really consider me your subordinate?" Lorne frowned slightly upon hearing Danitz's words.
In fact, he didn't have many requirements for where he lived, but he didn't like Danitz's attitude.
After a moment, he thought of something, turned to look at Danitz, and said, "As the boatswain, you should have your own room, right? I'll just make do with yours."
Upon hearing this, Danitz decisively shook his head:
"Don't even think about it, you piece of shit."
"Alright then..." Lorne shrugged helplessly, "However, I have a habit of talking in my sleep. If I accidentally blurt out something that happened recently while I'm asleep..."
"You! You're actually threatening me..." Danitz's fingers trembled with rage.
"This is our territory, you..."
"Ahem..." Lorne cleared his throat, mimicking Danitz's previous tone, "Quickly saw, quickly cut my leg..."
"Shit!" Danitz, his face flushed red, stopped him.
"Brando! You're more evil than I imagined!"
Lorne shrugged and didn't say anything.
Seeing Lorne's forced smile, Danitz finally slumped his shoulders in dejection.
"If you were to stay in my room, that would be too conspicuous, and most importantly, your cat doesn't like me either."
As he spoke, he pointed to Lorne's bulging satchel, inside which Lachi was lying, the memory of his earlier ambush by Lachi still fresh in his mind.
"Besides, two men living together, you wouldn't want people to misunderstand, would you?"
"Hmm...that makes sense..." Lorne rested his chin on his hand, pretending to think.
"Right, right?" Danitz nodded quickly.
"Why don't you just move out?"
"you!"
Just as Danitz adopted a posture of fighting to the death, Lorne chuckled awkwardly:
"Haha, just kidding, don't get worked up."
Finally, the two compromised, and as a consequence of altering the facts, Danitz helped Lorne find a clean storage room to use as his private room.
"A hammock? It's very seaside-style..." Lorne looked at the bed in front of him.
Due to the large waves and rough seas, hammocks were the most common form of sleeping at sea during this era.
"Laki, what do you think?" The orange cat in the bag poked its head out to look at it, sniffed it, and then shrank back in disgust, clearly feeling that its own cat bed was more comfortable.
Lying in the hammock, Lorne stared at the ceiling and couldn't help but sigh: "It's really amazing... I actually ended up in pirate territory."
……
The next day
"Danitz?" Lorne was jolted awake by the violent shaking. He opened his eyes groggily and stretched.
He wasn't used to sleeping in that hammock, and with the rough seas, he didn't fall asleep until midnight last night.
"Why are you still sleeping? It's almost time for morning class."
"Morning class?" Lorne asked, somewhat bewildered. "What time is it now?"
"Um... a little after six in the morning."
What?! I have to have early morning classes at 6:00 AM? This is even more painful than 8:00 AM!
Although reluctant, Lorne got out of bed, washed up quickly, and followed Danitz to the location of the morning class.
When Lorne followed Danitz up to the deck, the sight before him instantly brought him to his senses: dozens of muscular pirates sat neatly on the deck, each holding a book... They were actually doing their morning reading.
Lorne's lips twitched uncontrollably. The scene was so incongruous: those burly pirates with calloused hands were now carefully turning the yellowed pages of a book.
Is this really a pirate ship or a cram school?
"You're late, Mr. Brando." A cool voice came from behind. Edwina had appeared at the gangway entrance without anyone noticing.
She handed me a thick book with the title "An Etymological Dictionary of Ancient Hermetic Words" printed on its brown cover.
"Memorize the first 100 pages first." She said this as if she were saying how nice the weather was today.
"This is the most basic course."
"Feel free to ask questions anytime," Edwina added, "but there will be a test later."
100 pages? Test... Lorne stiffly turned to look at Danitz, who was winking at him with schadenfreude.
However, before he could gloat for long, he heard Edwina say:
"By the way, Danitz, your vacation is over. You should start studying too..."
Ah... Danitz's expression froze.
Lorne didn't mock Danitz as he was down; instead, he slumped into an empty chair with his dictionary in his arms, feeling as if he were back in his busy high school days.
Fortunately, the "machine" itself has enhanced memory capabilities. Although it doesn't reach the level of photographic memory, it can basically remember things after reviewing them a few times.
"As expected of an extraordinary being, although there are no obvious abilities, the enhancement of basic attributes is real."
If only there were magic potions in the original world, with this memory I wouldn't be afraid of memorizing things...
Although he had been complaining that the "monster" pathway's abilities weren't flashy enough, at this moment, Lorne sincerely praised the pathway.
……
Around noon, since he wasn't a sailor and didn't need to work, Lorne went to the pirate canteen for lunch after finishing his reading.
He saw a young man wearing a white shirt, black vest, and a floral bow tie, looking more like a clerk than a pirate. The man seemed to have noticed him.
The man had very light lake-green eyes, a straight nose, and thin lips, giving him an air of trustworthiness.
"Would you like to try this, sir?" He gracefully approached Lorne and handed him a drink that resembled yogurt.
"Thank you." Lorne accepted the cup and politely expressed his gratitude.
After the other person left, Danitz somehow entered the pirate restaurant and crept over furtively, whispering:
"Don't be fooled by his appearance; he's a canned wolffish, filled with stench!"
"Who is he?"
"Third pair, bow tie, Jodson," Danitz replied succinctly.
"I'm guessing he's a playboy?" Lorne scooped up a spoonful of yogurt and savored it... It tasted good.
"How did you know?" Danitz asked, somewhat surprised.
"Just guessing! That guy has a kind of dissolute air about him."
"Let me guess again, maybe that Yodson isn't planning on harming your captain?"
"What, I guessed right?" Lorne glanced at Danitz, who was speechless.
After a moment, Danitz spoke:
"You're right, Yodson once said he wanted to steal our captain's heart, and he got beaten up and had to stay behind to learn a lesson. What a piece of shit!"
He then looked at Lorne with some curiosity: "How did you guess?"
"Intuition," Lorne said mysteriously, scooping up another spoonful of yogurt.
It's actually quite easy to guess; what else could keep a playboy around besides women...?
"I suddenly have a question." Lorne put down his cup and looked at Danitz:
"Your adventure group couldn't have been formed just because you admire your captain, could it?"
