Volume 1: Chapter 102: A Day in Ito
The third day of the Izu training camp, Sunday.
The morning sunlight streamed through the washi paper window frames and onto the tatami mats.
Yuto Itsuka sat up from the bedding. After soaking in the hot spring last night, his fatigue had dissipated considerably, but he still seemed to have some worries on his mind.
He quickly washed up and packed his luggage—today was hiking day, and the group was moving from Atami to Ito City.
He knocked on the door next door and said, "Get up, beautiful girls, or you'll miss the train."
A moment later, the door was pulled open a crack, and Eriri, her blonde hair disheveled, poked her head out and mumbled, "Isn't the train at 8:15...?"
"If you miss the previous train, you'll have to wait thirty minutes. It's better to be prepared than not." Yuto waved the timetable on his phone.
Eriri puffed out her cheeks, and the door slammed shut again.
However, even through the door, Yudou could hear the sounds inside.
"Get up, you scheming woman! And Kato, get up too!"
"Where are you touching?"
"Get up now! Or I'll take your clothes off and open the door so Yuuto can see you!"
It was a rare treat to see Eriri manage to subdue Kasumigaoka-senpai, so Yuto Itsuka shook his head and chuckled before heading downstairs.
When Yuto went downstairs to the living room, Grandma Matsuma had already prepared breakfast. After greeting her, Yuto began to eat.
Ten minutes later, the three girls came downstairs, and they all looked to be in good spirits.
"Good morning, Yuto." Eriri yawned and rubbed her eyes. "Are you leaving today? I feel like I haven't stayed long enough."
“Yes, Grandma’s cooking is so delicious, I really don’t want to part with it,” Kasumigaoka Utaha chimed in.
Grandma Matsumura smiled and served miso soup: "Oh, I'm glad you like it. You can come and visit again when you have time."
She looked at Yuto Itsuka, "Itsuka-kun, did you sleep well last night?"
"Yes, thank you for your concern, Grandma." Itsuka Yuto smiled.
Kato Megumi quietly sipped her miso soup, her gaze lingering on Yuto's face for a moment before naturally shifting away.
After breakfast, the four said goodbye to Granny Matsuma. Granny Matsuma saw them to the door and gave Yuto a bag of homemade hot spring buns and sake to eat on the way down. "Climbing the mountain is tiring, so have something to eat on the way down. Also, my husband made some sake, Itsuka-kun can take it back and give it to his elders to try."
……
Take the JR Ito Line from Atami Station to Ito City. The journey is short, about 20 minutes.
The carriage wasn't crowded, and the four of them found seats. Eriri and Shiho were still bickering across the aisle.
Kato Megumi sat next to Yuto and gave him half of her headphones, which played a pilot audio version of "Love Metronome".
"This line of dialogue might be better voiced by Kasumigaoka-senpai herself," Yuto whispered.
Hui gave a soft "hmm" and the corners of her mouth curved slightly.
The train soon arrived at Ito Station. After exiting the station, they walked for about ten minutes along the street in front of the station and arrived at their booked hotel, Tokaikan.
Here stands a historic three-story wooden building on the banks of the Matsukawa River. Its vermilion railings and rustic eaves evoke the feeling of stepping back into the Showa era.
"Wow, it's so retro." Eriri looked up at the hotel. "Is this place haunted?"
"Sawamura-kun, are you hoping a ghost will come and have a late-night chat with you? Too bad, ghosts probably wouldn't be interested in someone with your flat figure," Kasumigaoka Utaha immediately chimed in.
"Who are you calling a flat-chested person?!" Eriri seemed a little unsure of herself.
Yuto Itsuka ignored their usual bickering and went straight inside to check in.
The Donghai Pavilion retains a large number of exquisite wood carvings and decorations, and the floorboards in the corridors creak slightly when you step on them.
The room assignments remained the same: one room for boys and one room for girls. Yuto Itsuka had just put his luggage on the tatami mat in his room and hadn't even had a chance to catch his breath when the door was slammed open.
"Yuto! Hurry up! What are you dawdling for!" Eriri said, one hand on her hip. "If we don't move now, we'll miss the first cable car to Mt. Omuro!"
Today she was wearing a pair of athletic shorts and a white T-shirt that were easy to move in, with a sun-protective jacket over them. She looked full of energy, as if she wasn't the one who was exhausted on the beach yesterday afternoon.
"I know, I know." Itsuki Yuuto helplessly grabbed the room key on the table and followed her out.
Kasumigaoka Utaha and Kato Megumi were already prepared and waiting for them in the corridor.
Shiyu also changed into a pair of athletic shorts today. She leaned against the pillar, arms crossed, and said, "Oh my, Sawamura-kun is so energetic, just like a puppy that's finally being taken out for a walk by its owner."
"You're the dog!" Eriri immediately turned around and glared at him, but seeing that Yuto had already walked away, she hurriedly chased after him, muttering, "I can't be bothered with you!"
The four of them walked along the streets by the Matsukawa River, accompanied by the sound of flowing water, and soon arrived at Ito Station.
Taking the Tokai Bus to Mount Omuro is a long journey, taking about forty minutes.
The bus traveled along the coastline for a while, then turned onto a mountain road.
Eriri leaned against the window, initially looking at the scenery with great interest, but soon became drowsy in the swaying carriage.
Her head bobbed up and down, finally resting gently on Itsuka Yuto's shoulder.
Yuto's body stiffened slightly, but he did not push her away.
Utaha Kasumigaoka, sitting in the back row, witnessed this scene. She squinted her eyes, tapped her knees lightly with her fingers, and kept shaking her legs.
Kato Megumi acted as if she hadn't seen anything and continued to focus on her phone.
The bus arrived at its final stop, "Cactus Park." After getting off the bus, you would arrive at the foot of Mt. Omuro.
The mountain is covered with a layer of lush green grass, without a single tree, and its unique shape resembles a giant matcha bowl turned upside down on the earth.
At the entrance to the cable car station stands a torii gate with the words "Asama Shrine" written on it.
“There are only four of us, so we can’t buy group tickets,” Yuto Itsuka said to the other three girls after looking at the price list.
He took out his wallet, ready to buy tickets, but Kasumigaoka Utaha pressed his hand down. "Junior, group tickets are 50 yen cheaper per person. How about we find someone to marry on the spot and gather 20 people?"
"No need, I'm afraid someone might actually sign up." Itsuka Yuto withdrew his hand and bought round-trip tickets for everyone.
The ticket design is adorable, depicting a boy and a girl sitting on a cable car, with the matcha bowl-shaped Mount Omuro in the background.
Eriri held it in her hand and muttered softly, "It looks like pudding."
“It’s a very strange shape,” Kato Megumi said.
"This is a ash heap formed after a volcanic eruption, and it's one of the iconic landscapes of Izu," Kasumigaoka Utaha explained.
“This cable car…” Eriri looked at the equipment slowly passing overhead, her expression somewhat stiff, “isn’t it fully enclosed?”
The cable cars at Mt. Omuro have open seating, not cabin-style seating.
Below you is a hillside tens of meters high, which looks quite thrilling.
"Sawamura-kun, you're not afraid of heights, are you?" Kasumigaoka Utaha asked with a playful smile.
"Only idiots are afraid!" Eriri's legs were weak, but her mouth was tough.
“I’ll sit with my junior, and you can sit with Kato,” Shiyu said, naturally moving closer to Itsuka Yuto.
"No way!" Eriri immediately objected. "I'm teaming up with Yuto! Kato, you're teaming up with this scheming woman, be careful she doesn't push you off!"
Kato Megumi, whose name was called, blinked.
Ultimately, thanks to Eriri's strong insistence, she was able to ride the same cable car as Yuto Itsuka.
The cable car slowly started moving up the mountain. As the altitude increased, the view became more and more open, but Eriri had no mood to appreciate the scenery. She gripped the safety bar in front of her tightly with both hands, her body tense, her eyes closed, and she was muttering to herself.
"Eri, open your eyes and look around, the scenery is quite nice," Yuto's voice rang out from beside her.
"No...I don't want to see it!"
"Really not going to see it? The houses and cars down the mountain have all been turned into models."
Under Yuto's enticement, Eriri finally couldn't resist and cautiously opened her eyes a crack.
Beneath her feet lay a gently receding, verdant hillside, and in the distance, the cityscape of Ito City and the azure coastline stretched out before her. The magnificent scenery made her instantly forget her fear.
"Wow..." she couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
"Junior, you really take meticulous care of the loser." Kasumigaoka Utaha's signature languid voice came from behind.
Eriri turned around and snapped, "Shut up!"
Because of the large movement, the cable car swayed slightly, which startled her so much that she quickly grabbed the safety bar and pulled her head back, which made Shi Yu laugh at her.
A few minutes later, the cable car arrived at the top of the mountain.
The feeling of being grounded made Eriri breathe a sigh of relief.
At the summit is a huge crater with a circumference of several kilometers, resembling a natural circular trail. At the bottom of the crater, an archery range has been built, where many tourists are experiencing archery.
"Shall we take a walk around the trail first?" Yuto Itsuka suggested.
The wind was strong at the summit, making their clothes flutter, but it also brought a wide view. They strolled along the edge of the crater, enjoying a 360-degree panoramic view. The rolling mountains of the Izu Peninsula, the azure coastline, and the distant Izu Oshima Island were all clearly visible.
"Look! Over there!" Eriri suddenly pointed in a direction and shouted excitedly.
Looking in the direction she was pointing, the outline of a snow-capped mountain peak could be faintly seen on the distant horizon.
Today the weather is sunny and the visibility is excellent.
“It’s Mount Fuji,” Kato Megumi said softly.
Kasumigaoka Utaha didn't speak, but stood quietly to the side gazing into the distance. The wind blew through her long, black hair, and she squinted her eyes slightly, as if trying to etch this scene into her mind.
Yuto Itsuka took out his phone and snapped a few photos, then turned to his companions and said, "How about we go to the archery range?"
“Okay, okay!” Eriri was the first to agree, her eyes blazing with a competitive spirit as she turned to stare at Kasumigaoka Utaha.
Seeing this, Shiwa laughed and said, "Sawamura-kun, are you going to have a competition with me?"
"That's right!"
"Oh my, that takes real courage."
The archery range experience is inexpensive, with ten arrows per person.
"I'll go first!" Eriri volunteered, picking up the bow and drawing the string in the same way she had seen in a movie.
But she clearly overestimated her arm strength; the bowstring was pulled crookedly, and her hands were trembling.
"Whoosh—" The arrow flew weakly, drawing an arc in the air before landing headfirst in the grass ten meters away from the target.
"Pfft—" Shi Yu laughed out loud without any attempt to hide her laughter.
Eriri blushed and stubbornly said, "I... I just haven't found the feeling yet!"
Undeterred, she then fired a second and a third arrow, but without exception, they all missed the target.
"When you get back, remember to exercise more," Yuto Itsuki could only offer a word of comfort.
When it was Kasumigaoka Utaha's turn, she gracefully picked up the bow and drew the string with perfect form, looking quite professional.
She murmured softly, "Penetrating, truth. Shattering, falsehood..."
The novelist's adolescent delusions are vividly portrayed.
"Whoosh!"
The arrow flew out with decent force, but its accuracy was a far cry from the target, missing the mark entirely.
"Ah, it seems the power of words has no effect on the laws of physics." She calmly put down her bow, as if nothing had just happened.
When it was Kato Megumi's turn, she waved her hand and said that she was not good at this sport.
Seeing this, Itsuka Yuto stepped forward, picked up the bow, and felt its weight.
He had never practiced archery and knew nothing about it, but he didn't care. He decided to invite a deity to possess him.
Yuto Itsuka begins to recall a TV series he watched as a child in his previous life—"The Great Hero Guo Jing!" Please grant me power!
Turn sideways, draw the bow, and aim.
It's now!
Yuto Itsuka roared, "Dragon, devour my enemies!"
Release your fingers.
"Buzz—" The bowstring vibrated.
The arrow shot through the air in an instant, hitting the bullseye red dot!
