Chapter 22 You really are pathetic.
Chapter 22 You really are pathetic.
Ron slowly rewound the timeline, and after noticing something amiss, he cautiously switched the timeline to between 2005 and 2009 and watched it repeatedly.
After watching for an unknown amount of time, Ron felt he hadn't found any useful clues and stopped investigating. What he had seen were mostly heartwarming scenes of friendship where "friends walk together for life."
But Tian Tian couldn't suppress the smile on her face. Perhaps it was because of her different perspective, but she sensed something different and felt like she had stumbled upon something.
"That's about enough." Ron took out a piece of paper and wrote on it.
The three left the reading room. Ron was puzzled by Tian Tian's lewd smile, but he didn't ask any further questions.
"First of all, '009' is the prison guard who takes our roll call every morning and evening. So the immediate problem is how he replaced Joe as the new '057'," Ron quickly summarized.
"We've already spoken with a prison guard, and he'll take us to investigate this afternoon."
"We're planning to see how to get to District Three this afternoon. If all goes well, we should be able to go in and take a look today," Lizzie explained to Ron.
After a brief discussion, Ron returned to the bathroom in Zone 2 with the watch face whose battery had been removed.
"A watch?" Xi Sang asked, looking at the watch face Su Zixu was holding. He didn't understand why Ron had gone to such lengths just to get a watch.
"You'll find out how useful it is later." Ron was sitting on the ground panting. Luckily, he crawled quickly, or he would have been exposed.
After playing with the watch face for a while, Su Zixu took off his coat, wrapped it in his coat, and held it in his arms. He then adjusted its position to make sure it wouldn't fall out, and put the battery in his pocket.
After everything in the bathroom was tidied up, about 20 minutes later, the young prison guard arrived and secretly brought water for the four of them.
The four men grabbed water and gulped it down, clearly parched. Then, Old Zeng noticed the young prison guard looking hesitant and asked curiously, "What's wrong?"
After hesitating for a moment, the junior prison guard said, "Seniors, um... we might not be able to go to the archives this afternoon."
Hearing this, Old Zeng immediately got angry, thinking he was going to change his mind: "Why? Wasn't this the agreement? Or... do you not want to work for the boss anymore?"
"No, no, no, it's... I went there this morning. I wanted to look up some information myself, but... I found out I couldn't get to the third floor."
"That's right. To go to the library and upstairs, you can scan your face or use a key. You can borrow the key."
I tried facial recognition first, but it said I didn't have enough permissions. Then I went to the management office to borrow one, but they still told me I didn't have enough permissions and wouldn't lend it to me.
The young prison guard's ears burned, and he looked slightly embarrassed.
"You're really pathetic," Su Zixu thought to himself before asking, "Then how can I get the key?"
"The warden probably has all the keys to the prison doors. Quaid... he has them too. You guys are on good terms with him, so getting a key shouldn't be too difficult."
"It's not difficult, but he's naturally suspicious and definitely won't lend it to us easily."
"Besides, the investigation of '057' is also a clandestine operation. If we borrow the key so openly, we're bound to alert them," Old Zeng said.
Then, while feigning composure and understanding, he gradually became somewhat troubled.
At this point, the young prison guard was so anxious that he kept scratching his head, unable to come up with any good solutions with his simple mind.
"Alright, let's do the laundry this afternoon first. These two are going to District 3 to work with Edwin and the others."
Ron then drafted a preliminary plan in his mind, pointing at Su Zixu and Lao Zeng as he spoke.
"We'll split up this afternoon. You don't need to worry about me. Just take the two of them to meet up with Edwin."
"You... know who Edwin is, right?" Ron looked at this somewhat unreliable junior prison guard, feeling a little unsure of his chances, but still asked just to be on the safe side.
"Of course I know that. Those guys in District 2 are notorious." Seeing that the problem seemed to have a solution, the young prison guard's worried expression faded considerably.
Having finalized the afternoon's plan, the group didn't waste any more time and quickly headed to the cafeteria.
In the mess hall, a few people sat around a table against the wall, the atmosphere unusually quiet. The prisoners all avoided this table, and Edwin looked at the surrounding prisoners, his face so dark it could drip water.
Yesterday's events were quite strange; he broke the rules, and we haven't yet figured out a way to deal with it.
A prison guard approached them from a distance with two men. He recognized the two men; they were the ones who had claimed to be in the same cell as Liu Runyu yesterday morning.
Their roommate didn't go back last night, so they've probably come here to confront them.
The young prison guard felt uneasy. He considered himself a weak person and didn't want to deal with the prison bullies, but he still gritted his teeth and started looking for people.
Before long, upon noticing the approaching prison guards, the group sitting around the table became alert and sat up straight.
The oppressive gaze from the young prison guard immediately dampened his spirits by half. Just as he was about to step forward and speak, Su Zixu patted him on the shoulder from behind.
Su Zixu stepped forward first: "I am the one who promised to help you with the work yesterday. I wonder if you seniors still remember me."
"Your friend, he..."
"He didn't come back last night, but don't worry, everyone. My friend and I aren't here to cause trouble. We will definitely do what we promised you."
Su Zixu interrupted the dark-skinned man who was speaking, which displeased the man.
"No need to come any further. There's nothing I can do to help. You can leave now. I won't hold the previous score against you." It was Edwin who spoke. He was in a bad mood and didn't want to cause any more trouble.
"You're missing one person too." Old Zeng remembered that there was a blond boy in the group who wasn't there at the moment.
"They disappeared along with that unlucky guy." The dark-skinned man chimed in, his tone not pleasant. "It's all your friend's fault."
"Can you tell us about what happened yesterday?" Old Zeng didn't mind the man's words; he wanted to get more clues.
All eyes turned to Edwin. After a long silence, he recounted what had happened the previous afternoon, along with his speculations and the consequences of the discovery.
"They actually went to District Three." Old Zeng's pupils contracted slightly.
"If that's the case, then we must go, whether to find our friends or to find your people."
"Moreover, there is indeed something strange about this. Aren't you curious why the Third District doesn't need to do any work, yet they've assigned you to guard the door?" After listening to Edwin's explanation, Su Zixu expressed his opinion.
"What's so curious about that? It's just a sinecure." The one who spoke was the curly-haired man, who also felt it was better to avoid trouble.
"Okay." Edwin stroked his chin, and after some consideration, finally agreed.
"One last question: when Quaid assigned this task to you, did he give you any instructions?"
"Let's not fight or run around, just sit quietly," Edwin replied after thinking for a moment.
"Thank you." Su Zixu thanked Lao Zeng and then turned to leave.
After eating a quick bite to fill their stomachs, Su Zixu and Lao Zeng followed the young prison guard out of the restaurant, where they waited for Edwin and his group.
"Finally out...that scared me to death." The young prison guard patted his chest as he walked out of the restaurant, taking several breaths to relax.
"You're supposed to be a prison guard, but you're really pathetic." Su Zixu glanced at the cowardly prison guard standing next to him and ignored him.
