Chapter 16: The Prelude to the First Invasion - Part 1
Twenty minutes before the space carrier took off, Aegis satellites detected that the 25th Task Force/Mobile Support Force of the Second Fleet had launched over a hundred carrier-based aircraft.
The two parties were not under the same management system, and Nick Fury neither inquired nor cared.
This is normal. Extraterrestrial armies could arrive at any time. The armies of the five major powers are frequently being mobilized, and some are even conducting live-fire drills.
He assumed the carrier-based aircraft were conducting a live-fire exercise, so he didn't pay much attention. After hearing the conversation between Vega and Captain Steve Rogers, he left the command area and went to Vega's room.
After he left, Maria Hill, who took over command, noticed something was wrong. According to satellite and radar data, the carrier-based aircraft were slowly surrounding the space carrier.
She immediately contacted Vice Admiral Jensen, the commander of the Second Fleet, only to be told that the space carrier was being used as a hypothetical enemy and that the enemy was demanding that the space carrier cooperate with them in simulated exercises.
Many people dislike S.H.I.E.L.D., including the U.S. Navy.
Whenever S.H.I.E.L.D. fleet ships encounter U.S. Navy warships while on missions at sea, the latter will inevitably provoke them.
This situation has become the norm, and it has even become more serious since the space carrier entered service.
Not wanting to interrupt Vega as he was explaining the situation, Maria Hill agreed to conduct the joint simulation exercise without consulting Nick Fury.
There's nothing we can do even if we disagree. They've come to bully us; are we just going to avoid a fight? What about morale? It would be embarrassing if word got out.
Furthermore, although the Navy acted very aggressively this time, the exercise also benefited S.H.I.E.L.D.
The space carrier has not been in service for long and has not conducted a single large-scale exercise. She does not know how much combat power the space carrier can exert in the event of a real battle.
Maria Hill issued the exercise order, and in the process, the carrier-based aircraft continued to fly toward the space carrier.
Maria Hill didn't pay much attention, assuming that these carrier-based aircraft were there to visit and explore the space carrier.
But who could have imagined that when the carrier-based aircraft group was less than 100 kilometers away from the space carrier, they launched missiles in unison and then rushed toward the space carrier at full speed while launching missiles!
It wasn't until the alarm sounded that Maria Hill realized something was wrong, and she immediately ordered everyone to their combat positions.
Unfortunately, the time was too short.
No one expected that the Second Fleet's carrier-based aircraft would actually launch an attack on the space carrier. With hundreds of missiles, the space carrier would definitely be destroyed, and no one would be able to survive.
Fortunately, Vega acted quickly, deploying an energy shield to protect the entire space carrier the moment he heard the alarm.
As soon as the shield took shape, a dense barrage of missiles slammed into it, with violent explosions echoing one after another. The shield rippled in layers, and the massive space carrier was shaken from side to side by the powerful shockwave.
"Maintain flight attitude! All combat personnel, immediately take up combat positions! Prepare for counterattack! Prepare for counterattack!" Maria Hill gripped the handrails to steady herself and roared with a livid face.
The operators around them were pale-faced. What could they possibly do to fight back? This mothership was an experimental vessel, and its role was that of an auxiliary support command center.
The mothership's only weapons are its carrier-based aircraft and two nuclear missile launch systems. What can it use to retaliate? At this point, launching fighter jets and nuclear missiles would be suicidal.
"Control the space carrier's descent, call for support, contact Lieutenant General Johnson and order him to immediately cease the attack, contact the White Building and the Star Building!" Maria Hill reacted quickly, revising the orders before grabbing the communicator and asking, "Li, how long can the energy shield last? How many attacks can it withstand?"
"What's going on? Who's attacking us?" Vega, who was maintaining the shield in the room, had no idea what was happening outside, but the continuous explosions outside and his rapidly depleting energy made him realize that the situation was very bad.
Maria Hill: "Hundreds of carrier-based aircraft from Task Force 25/Mobile Support Force of the Second Fleet are attacking us, and the space carrier has no ability to retaliate."
"What?! Why would they attack you?" Vega was stunned; he never expected this answer.
As soon as Vega finished speaking, a carrier-based aircraft that had just launched its missiles launched a suicide attack, crashing directly into the energy shield at maximum speed.
With a deafening roar, the carrier-based aircraft was smashed to pieces, and then the fuel inside the engine compartment exploded, turning it into an expensive bomb.
There was no parachute in the sky, and the pilot of the carrier-based aircraft did not activate the ejection function at all; he himself became part of the bomb.
The second, the third, the fourth...
One after another, the carrier-based aircraft, having launched their missiles, rammed into the space carrier as if they were the last missiles to be fired.
Explosions continued to rang out, and everyone who witnessed the scene was so shocked that their minds went blank, and they temporarily lost the ability to think.
"What on earth happened?" Vega in the room received no reply, and at the same time, he keenly sensed that the flames of life nearby were going out one by one.
The shield didn't break; the only ones who died were the Second Fleet pilots outside the shield, who were flying carrier-based aircraft to attack the space carrier.
"Wow, Loki's playing this big?" Vega quickly figured out the reason.
He didn't notice anything passing through the shield, which means S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't retaliate. In that case, the pilots could only have launched a suicide attack.
The U.S. military today is not like it was during World War II; they cannot be acting voluntarily, and S.H.I.E.L.D. is not the enemy.
The only reason those pilots could launch a mass suicide attack is that they were controlled by Loki's Mind Control Scepter.
The entire fleet might be under Loki's control. If that's the case, then the attacks will definitely not be limited to this one, and Loki will definitely not only attack them as a single target!
After figuring it out, Vega gave a wry smile.
If they start with such a big move, how big will the Chitauri invasion be next?
The movie only shows a few streets in Manhattan being destroyed, but in Vega's view, who is experiencing the disaster firsthand, the entire state of New York could potentially be reduced to ruins.
Indeed, movies are movies, and reality is reality. Only by truly living in the Marvel universe can one realize how dangerous this world is.
Vega could tell that the pilots were being controlled by Loki, and Nick Fury and the others, once they came to their senses, naturally realized the same thing.
Nick Fury: "Lee, those carrier-based pilots have been taken over by Loki. Can you save them?"
