Chapter 50 Twin Tombs, "Wild Dogs"
Chapter 50 Twin Tombs, "Wild Dogs"
Ye Jianguo's grip was incredibly strong; his five fingers were gripping Lu Dan's wrist as if he wanted to crush Lu Dan's bones.
Lu Dan stumbled and was dragged along the way. Along the way, he encountered several villagers carrying hoes to the fields. Upon seeing this scene, they all stopped to watch.
"Hey, boss, slow down... slow down, my shoe fell off!"
Lu Dan shouted in a pretentious manner, trying to use words to dilute the suffocating stares around him.
Ye Jianguo ignored him, his face cold, and dragged Lu Dan to the overgrown path behind the mountain.
There was no one around; even the birdsong was swallowed up by the shade of the trees surrounding the sky.
Ye Jianguo let go, and Lu Dan rubbed his wrist, grimacing as he leaned against a crooked tree, breathing heavily.
Before he could catch his breath, Ye Jianguo's square face was already right in front of him, his eyes sharp.
"Adan, stop pretending with me." Ye Jianguo's voice was very low. "What's going on in this village? Last night's broadcast, the so-called 'god,' and now these villagers acting so strangely. You're a local, don't tell me you don't know anything."
Lu Dan raised an eyebrow slightly.
That's too direct, very straightforward.
His mind was racing. Given this way of speaking, Ye Jianguo was probably not a designer, but rather a completely natural-looking NPC.
"Hey, boss, what are you talking about? How could I possibly know anything?" Lu Dan gave a wry smile, rubbing his back as if he were utterly miserable. "If I had known, would I have slept like a log last night?"
"You have no idea how torturous the hard wooden beds in the village are. When I woke up this morning, my whole body felt like it was going to fall apart, especially my shoulders, which felt like I had been carrying sacks all night."
As he spoke, he subtly observed Ye Jianguo's reaction.
Ye Jianguo narrowed his eyes, his gaze sweeping back and forth across Lu Dan's face.
Silence was like a wall, standing between the two of them.
Just as Lu Dan thought the NPC was about to explode, hurried footsteps came from afar.
"Team leader!"
Da Lu came running up, panting, his fat body jiggling with each step. Zhang Min followed behind him, her face pale, clutching her notebook tightly in her hand.
"Huff...huff...team leader, we've searched the whole village..." Da Lu wiped the sweat from his face. "We haven't even seen a ghost. The way these villagers are looking at us is really creepy."
Ye Jianguo withdrew his gaze from Lu Dan and snorted coldly: "If there's none in the village, then we can only be on the mountain. Let's go up the mountain."
After saying that, he took the lead, pushed aside the waist-high weeds, and walked towards the gloomy depths of the back mountain.
Lu Dan shrugged and followed slowly behind.
The mountain path was difficult to traverse, and the higher they climbed, the heavier the humidity in the air became, causing all four of them to feel itchy.
After turning a corner, the view opened up to a small hillside.
Among the weeds nearby, two brand-new little mounds of earth stood out conspicuously. Two rotten wooden planks were stuck in front of the mounds, with crooked black characters written on them. The one on the left read "Yao Yao," and the one on the right read "Yao Yao," homophones but different characters.
Lu Dan paused in his steps.
Yao means beautiful jade, and Yao means demon.
"Whose child is this?"
Zhang Min shrank back in fright, but no one answered her.
Lu Dan's eyes flickered, and he turned to look at Da Lu beside him: "Brother Da Lu, can I borrow some paper and pen?"
"Huh? Oh?" Da Lu paused for a moment, then took out a pen and paper from his pocket and handed it over.
Lu Dan took it, copied the two names onto the paper, and also drew a rough sketch of the locations of the two graves.
"Why are you memorizing this?" Ye Jianguo turned around, his brows furrowed.
"The village chief instructed me beforehand." Lu Dan didn't even look up, and the lie came out of his mouth without hesitation. "He said that these two children belong to a madman's family over at the edge of the village. They've been wandering around and haven't been living peacefully. He asked me to note the date so that I could find someone to perform a ritual later."
"Aren't we looking for someone? Maybe these two kids have met Sister Chen Hua before."
This reason is 99.9% absurd, but in this strange place, it seems somewhat reasonable.
Ye Jianguo didn't ask any further questions and urged them to continue on their way.
Further on, the sound of water grew louder, and a dark, murky river blocked our path. The water was extremely turbid, with garbage and animal carcasses floating on its surface.
"Woof!"
A dog's bark suddenly rang out, the bushes beside them burst open, and a dark figure pounced out.
"what!"
Da Lu let out a scream and collapsed to the ground. The dark figure bit down hard on his calf, its sharp fangs piercing through his trouser leg, and blood spurted out in spurts.
"Stray dogs? It's stray dogs! Help!" Zhang Min screamed, picking up stones from the ground and throwing them.
Ye Jianguo reacted quickly, rushing forward and kicking the dark figure in the stomach.
"Bang! Bang!"
The stray dog was kicked and then hit hard by a stone, but it didn't budge. It let out a low growl from its throat and bit down harder. The dog was in so much pain that Da Lu rolled around on the ground, its face turning a liverish color.
Lu Dan stood a few steps away, about to step forward to help.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through his left ankle, and a chilling energy rushed into his eyes, changing the scene within them.
What's that frantically tearing at Da Lu's leg right in front of me isn't some stray dog at all.
It was clearly a child who was crawling on all fours and completely naked.
The child was emaciated, with protruding spines, bluish-purple skin, and a mouthful of sharp teeth embedded tightly in Da Lu's flesh. His eyes were pitch black, greedily sucking the blood gushing from his wounds.
Seeing that there was really no other way, we couldn't just lose another person to take the blame, could we?
Lu Dan reached into his robes with his right hand and obtained the Reaper Revolver disguised as a slingshot.
He pulled apart two yellowish rubber bands, and although there were no live bullets, a faint, pale blue light automatically condensed at the aiming point.
Without further hesitation, he aimed at the frantically shaking little head and let go.
"Boom!"
The rubber band snapped back with a crisp sound.
In Lu Dan's vision, a psionic bullet wrapped in exorcism runes whistled out and accurately struck "Wild Dog" in the forehead.
"Aww—"
The "wild dog" let out a mournful howl, its head snapping back as if struck by a heavy hammer, crashing heavily into the muddy riverbank.
In the eyes of the other three, it was as if Lu Dan had taken out a slingshot and hit a mad dog.
The "wild dog" thrashed about in the mud for a moment, seemingly extremely wary of Lu Dan's slingshot. It glared at him fiercely, then tucked its tail between its legs and plunged into the rushing river, disappearing instantly.
"Huff... huff..."
Da Lu lay on the ground, clutching his bloodied and mangled calf, gasping for breath in pain.
Ye Jianguo turned his head and looked at the wooden slingshot in Lu Dan's hand with a complicated expression.
"Good aim."
"I used to hunt birds a lot when I was a kid." Lu Dan blew on the rubber band, stuffed the slingshot back into his pocket, and put on an innocent smile. "After all, there aren't any other entertainment activities in the village, right? Now we can only go back to the village to treat Brother Lu."
