Chapter 117: Baby Names and Then Bad News
Chapter 117: Baby Names and Then Bad News
In his excitement, Byron showered Strawberry with kisses. He pecked her on the cheeks, on the neck, on the nose, on the lips... He would have even kissed her boobs if the baby wasn’t suckling on them.
He didn’t notice the hostile look Alcippe and other Amazonians were giving him. And he didn’t care. He just wanted to show Strawberry that he was happy to have her as the mother of his twins. He wanted her to feel appreciated.
He could imagine how hard it must have been for her when she realized she was pregnant. Even in normal circumstances it’s still painful and stressful to endure 9 months of pregnancy and childbirth.
Imagine how worse it was when you couple that with the fact that she was a priestess, that she was supposed to be pure and that no one even knew she had had sex with Byron.
Being pregnant revealed her secret. It exposed her betrayal to Goddess Calliope. Who could tell how the goddess would react to such betrayal. Would she still help them?
This was at a time when they had lost Byron. Some Amazonians must have been angry with Strawberry. Or jealous of her. Or judgemental.
The guilt alone must have consumed her. How many nights had she lay wondering how to confess what she had done?
No. Byron didn’t care if anyone was around, or if anyone found his actions inappropriate. He was going to do anything to make sure Strawberry understood that now everything was going to be alright. That he appreciated her sacrifice.
"Thank you for giving me these beautiful twins," he said to her, still showering every inch of her body with kisses.
Strawberry was ecstatic.
"Ah, stop! People are watching," she whispered to him, giggling.
"Let them watch!"
Just then, a shout came from Alcippe’s group. "Tusked-wolves are coming!"
The mood shifted. The Amazonians atop the rampart readied their bows and spears. Alcippe started issuing orders, telling them to go back inside the walls.
In a frenzy, they all ran toward the drawbridge. As they passed over the moat, Byron noticed that it was actually a stream that had been diverted to snake around the castle.
It was so clear he could see some fish. They didn’t look like any fish he had ever seen, but before he could enjoy watching them, he found himself passing through the gate. He made a mental note to ask about the fish later.
"Heave!" came a tremendous shout from a group of Amazons that was pulling on ropes to raise the drawbridge. Like any man, this fascinated him. He wanted to observe the mechanisms behind it, but the baby in his arms started crying.
He tried to soften his voice. "Don’t cry. Daddy’s got you!" He nuzzled the baby but it didn’t change anything. The panic and shouts all around him had frightened the baby.
He turned to Strawberry. She tugged at his arm. "Come! Let’s go somewhere quiet."
Nobody followed them.
It wasn’t because they didn’t notice. They did. Alcippe just pretended she was occupied with shouting orders to the defenders atop the gatehouse. She was telling them to shoot the Tusked-wolves before they got closer to the drawbridge.
Nym understood this was time for a reunion between a dad and a mom, so she went to help the girls who were pulling up the drawbridge.
As he followed behind Strawberry, he wondered about Keza. Where was she? Where were the Queens? Why hadn’t they come to greet him?
He didn’t voice any of these questions though.
It would be disrespectful to ask Strawberry about other women, queens or not, before he even got to catch up with her.
That’s why he allowed her to lead him into a huge door. They emerged in a big hall, but she didn’t approach any of the couches there. She instead headed to the right side and went up spiraling stairs that went up, and up, and up the castle.
Byron was panting and was starting to sweat when she finally stepped into a room and went to sit on a chair next to a window.
There was another chair opposite her, so Byron went and sat on it.
"Give me The First," she said, already having bared both her breasts. The Second was suckling on her left boob. Byron gently lowered the First into her lap and the baby immediately started suckling on Strawberry’s right boob.
Looking at her, sitting, murmuring to the twins as they suckled greedily... It was a beautiful scene that invoked in him the kinds of emotions one couldn’t explain using words. One had to feel it to fully understand it.
For a moment, silence fell over the room. Well, at least if one ignored the shouts and howls from down the castle grounds and all around.
If Byron had looked out of the window, he would have seen hundreds of Tusked-wolves running out of the forest. He would have also seen countless arrows flying from the rampart, hitting some of the Tusked-wolves who were immediately torn apart by their brethren.
He would have wondered why those Tusked-wolves even bothered attacking the castle. If they were going to eat each other, why not do it in the forest?
Most importantly, he would have wondered why Alcippe had come to meet him outside if she knew those Tusked-wolves would attack. He would have wondered why they had allowed Strawberry to bring his twins outside.
But he had not noticed all that. He was not wondering about any of that. They had been warned early, everyone was inside the castle and both the drawbridge and the gate were already secured. There was nothing to worry about.
He just watched Strawberry and the twins, listened to her murmuring as if it was him it was intended for and allowed a smile to appear on his face.
"You look so beautiful as a mother!"
Strawberry raised her gaze from the first and offered Byron a smile, then lowered her gaze again, this time on the Second, still murmuring a lullaby.
Byron didn’t like thinking about his twins as the First and the Second.
"We should name them," he said, more like to himself than to Strawberry.
She raised her gaze again, and this time she stopped murmuring.
"It’s your job. I did mine. I carried them in my belly for months."
Byron let out a chuckle.
"I know you did yours. And you did it well. But you can still suggest some names. Don’t you want to name at least one?"
"I could, but I don’t know any boy names. You are the only one I’ve met, remember? Unless you want me to name them Byron the First and Byron the Second, then no."
Byron burst out laughing. "I didn’t know you were this funny."
"I’m not trying to be."
This was perhaps true. Byron still wanted her to participate in the naming of their twins, so he pressed on. "I understand you don’t know any boy names, but you can get inspired by nature."
Now it was she who burst out laughing. "You want me to name them a fruit like you named me?"
"Don’t you like it?"
"Of course I do. Strawberry is a beautiful name, but I don’t suppose it would work well on boys, would it?"
"Of course not. I did say to take inspiration."
"You mean like Berry?" she said.
"Yeah! Like Berry. Berry Byron. How does that sound?"
She squealed. "I actually like it. Berry Byron the First and Berry Byron the Second."
Byron palmed his face, dying from laughter.
"Oh gods, no! They can’t both be Berry. Change it a little bit."
She went back to humming a lullaby to the twins, thinking. Then her eyes widened. "I found it. Berra. Berry and Berra."
"No. Berra sounds like a girl’s name."
"Berru then."
"Try again."
"Berrek."
"That sounds good actually."
"Berry Byron and Berrek Byron."
Byron nodded his head.
She looked at the First and said, "Oh my beautiful Berry." She turned to the Second and said, "And my beautiful Berrek. You finally have names. I told you it will happen when your father returns. I told you, didn’t I?"
Then she started crying.
Byron crossed the distance between them and wiped her tears away. "Indeed, I’ve returned."
More hot tears ran down her cheeks. "I was scared you were dead. I was scared you would..."
"Shhh! I’m here now. I’m here now. You don’t have to worry anymore."
"But I am worried. I don’t know how Hypolyta will react when she hears that I have twins."
"You shouldn’t worry. She will be happy for you. Why would she react any other way?"
This made her cry even more. She seemed devastated. "You don’t understand. She lost her baby. She lost her baby before she even gave birth."
