Chapter 1202 Showing No Face
Chapter 1202 Showing No Face
The office door creaked open, and Section Chief Wang from the security department walked in with two team members. All three were in uniform, holding gleaming handcuffs, their eyes sharp as eagles, quickly scanning the people in the room before finally settling on Liu Li.
Liu Li's face turned deathly pale, as if all his strength had been drained away. His legs went weak, and he almost collapsed to the ground, but luckily someone nearby caught him. He looked at Zhu Tao in a panic, his eyes filled with fear and pleading—this wasn't what was supposed to be! Wasn't the plan to force Gu Nan to admit his mistake and ruin his reputation? Why were the security guards brought here? Were they going to arrest him?
Zhu Tao was stunned. The cigarette in his hand fell onto his trousers with a "thud," burning him so badly that he shuddered and quickly brushed it off. His original plan was to incite the workers to riot, ruin Gu Nan's reputation, and hopefully force him to resign voluntarily. He hadn't intended to have the security department "go through the motions"! What if things really escalated to the point of arresting someone, and more problems arose that couldn't be contained?
He quickly stood up and waved his hands repeatedly at Section Chief Wang of the Security Department: "Hey, Section Chief Wang, I didn't call you! This is just an internal chat, it's none of your business. Please leave, please leave. I'll call you if I need you!"
Section Chief Wang of the Security Department didn't move, but respectfully looked at Gu Nan, waiting for his instructions. Before coming, Gu Nan had given clear instructions: as soon as he clapped his hands, he should come in and take control of the scene; all the people he was supposed to bring should be present, and he would take responsibility for anything that happened.
The atmosphere in the room froze instantly, even the floating smoke seemed to solidify. Liu Li stood there, trembling, unable to utter a single word; the other workers looked at each other, their previous arrogance vanished, leaving only panic and unease, heads bowed, not daring to speak; Zhu Tao stood there, his face alternating between pale and flushed, not knowing where to put his hands.
Gu Nan looked at the scene before him, picked up the document on the table, and slowly turned to the first page. It contained a record of Liu Li's theft and sale of parts years ago, along with the signature of someone who knew the truth. His voice was calm yet carried immense weight: "Factory Director, don't rush. If we're going to get to the bottom of this, we need to be thorough to avoid leaving any loose ends. Liu Li, you should first tell the security personnel who you gave those parts to back then, and what benefits you received in return."
Gu Nan's face was devoid of any smile; his lips were pressed into a straight line, and his tone was as crisp and decisive as a stone hitting the ground: "Director Zhu, I'm the one who called these people. It just so happens that there are some long-standing problems in the factory that need to be cleaned up, so that people don't keep using your name to cause trouble. If things get out of hand, it will be inconvenient for you to handle, and you'll end up with a reputation for lax discipline." He was there to deal with this group of people, so that Zhu Tao wouldn't think that having a few cronies around would give him the upper hand.
Zhu Tao was speechless for a long time, his face flushed red. He was about to try to smooth things over and say that it was all a misunderstanding, but Gu Nan didn't give him a chance to speak. He turned to look at Liu Li, who was pale and sweating, his eyes sharp as knives, as if trying to pierce through his flesh: "Liu Li, you have to stand up for what you said at the meeting. Don't try to deny it when all the evidence is presented later. That would be pointless."
Liu Li opened his mouth, but his throat felt blocked. Cold sweat streamed down his forehead, soaking his collar. He had no idea how much information Gu Nan knew, or if all those old grievances had been brought up. His heart was pounding like a rabbit's, so hard it felt like it was about to explode. For a moment, he couldn't utter a complete sentence, only managing to make "uh...uh..." sounds.
Gu Nan pulled a yellowed document from his briefcase and slammed it on the table with a "thud," the crisp sound of the paper hitting the table echoing in the room. "Liu Li, you don't think I didn't make you keep any receipts when I dealt with your embezzlement of workshop materials back then, do you? Open your eyes and look at this. Isn't this your signature? Isn't every single account written clearly? Even how much money you made selling the scrap metal you secretly transported out, and who you sold it to, is all remembered perfectly." The handwriting on the document was crooked and messy, with a hint of deliberate sloppiness, but it was indeed Liu Li's signature from back then. The ink had long since dried, but it was like a series of brand marks, burning Gu Nan's eyes.
When Liu Li saw the document, his legs went numb, and he almost collapsed to his knees with a thud. Luckily, he managed to steady himself by grabbing the corner of the table. His lips trembled, and he couldn't utter a complete sentence for a long time: "I...I...that's all..."
Upon seeing this, Zhu Tao's heart skipped a beat, sensing something was wrong. However, he still forced himself to remain calm and looked at Liu Li, trying to help him out of the predicament: "Tell me, what exactly happened? Did Deputy Factory Director Gu make a mistake? It's an old matter from many years ago; maybe it's someone with the same name?"
How could Liu Li possibly defend himself? The evidence was right in front of him, each piece of evidence piercing his sore spot. Those sordid things he thought he had kept buried deep inside were now laid bare in the sunlight. He opened his mouth, but could only repeatedly mutter, "I didn't... it wasn't me..." He couldn't think of anything else to say, his voice barely audible, like a mosquito's hum.
Zhu Tao wanted to press further and muddy the waters, but Gu Nan had already turned to the security officer at the door, his tone leaving no room for argument, carrying the authority of a command: "What are you waiting for? Take him out, lock him up in the security office, and thoroughly investigate how much embezzlement he's engaged in in the purchasing department over the past few years. From office supplies to raw materials, go through every single transaction clearly, without any ambiguity. I want to see just how much he's embezzled from the factory, that he dares to speak so brazenly and recklessly at the meeting."
As if grasping at a last straw, Liu Li suddenly cried out to Zhu Tao, her voice shrill: "Director Zhu! Please save me! I did everything you asked! I even gave you half of the kickbacks from those purchases! You can't just abandon me!"
Zhu Tao's face turned ashen, as if ink had been splashed on it. He immediately interrupted him sharply: "What nonsense are you spouting! Deputy Factory Director Gu, so many years have passed since this happened. Liu Li has been well-behaved in the factory these past few years and hasn't made any more mistakes. Why don't we just let it go? Give him a chance to make amends and have him write a self-criticism."
Gu Nan shook his head, his eyes as firm as a rock: "This matter can't be left like this. Who knows if he's become even more ruthless over the years, using the same old methods in his new position? If we don't thoroughly investigate, how can we live up to the factory's rules and maintain order? If others follow his example and exploit loopholes, how can the factory be managed?"
The security personnel had already received Gu Nan's instructions. Moreover, their benefits and bonuses were all secured by Gu Nan, and they always trusted him, so naturally they obeyed his orders. Two men stepped forward, lifted the limp Liu Li, and dragged him out without explanation, ignoring his struggles and cries. Liu Li's cries grew fainter and fainter, interspersed with curses of "Zhu Tao, you'll die a horrible death!", finally disappearing at the end of the corridor.
