Chapter 920 Gu Nan goes to find someone
Chapter 920 Gu Nan goes to find someone
Gu Nan watched Tiedan's father busying around in the yard—sweeping fallen leaves and checking for debris in the corners—and smiled and advised, "Brother, there's really no need to be so tired. Just go to work as usual. I'll be watching over here, so you don't have to stay here."
Tiedan's father stood up, wiped the sweat from his forehead, just smiled innocently, waved his hand, chuckled twice, and didn't say much. Judging from his posture, it was obvious that he planned to continue guarding here and refused to leave.
Seeing this, Gu Nan knew that he was stubborn and that it was useless to persuade him any further, so he said nothing more and turned back to his own home. As soon as he entered the house, he saw Ran Qiuye holding the child and gently walking around the house, coaxing the child to play. Seeing that Gu Nan came back earlier than usual, she looked up in surprise and asked, "Gu Nan, why are you back so early today? Isn't the factory busy?"
Gu Nan walked forward and gently touched the child's soft little face, and the little guy giggled. He turned to Ran Qiuye again, his eyes full of concern: "Are you okay? Are you tired of taking care of the children at home? If you feel tired, or if there is anything, don't hide it, just tell me directly."
Ran Qiuye smiled and said in a relaxed tone, "I'm fine, don't worry. The child was very well behaved today. It's just that Heizi seemed to have run away a while ago and hasn't come back yet. I don't know where he went. Oh, and a stranger came to the courtyard today. He looked unfamiliar and was wearing an old hat. I didn't get a good look at him. Then he went to the backyard. I don't know who he was looking for."
Gu Nan's heart skipped a beat—a stranger? He nodded calmly, "Got it. I'll go cook first, and then ask Heizi when he comes back."
Ran Qiuye responded, carried the child to the sofa and sat down, continuing to pat the little guy in her arms and humming a lullaby.
After dinner, when Ran Qiuye and the child were both asleep, the house was quiet, with only the sound of breathing. Gu Nan gently closed the bedroom door and walked into the yard. He closed his eyes and concentrated for a moment, as if sensing the movement around him. After a while, he opened his eyes and looked at Heizi, who was resting in the shadow of the corner, and whispered, "Heizi, come here. What did you find when you went out today?"
Heizi immediately stood up, his ears perked up alertly. He tiptoed to Gu Nan and replied in a low voice in animal language, "I recognized the stranger who came today. He's the beggar who's been hanging around here for the past few days. He has an indescribable odor. I quietly followed him all the way and finally saw him enter the abandoned old factory in the south. There seemed to be a lot of people inside, so I didn't dare to follow him in for fear of being discovered. I just waited outside for a while, and when I saw nothing was happening, I came back."
After hearing this, Gu Nan's lips curled up into a cold smile, his eyes darkening. "Okay, it seems I've found the right place. I'll go over there tomorrow to take a look. If there are few people inside and it's easy to do, I'll just take care of it. If there are too many people and it's hard to do, I'll hand it over to Uncle Tong Ren and let them clean up this mess to save us trouble."
Heizi knew Gu Nan's ability, so he just nodded solemnly when he heard it, without saying anything more, and quietly retreated to the corner and lay down to continue keeping watch.
Gu Nan returned to the house and lay down on the bed, but he didn't sleep well. He turned over and looked at Ran Qiuye and the child sleeping beside him. He knew in his heart that if these people were not dealt with, there would be no peace in the house, and he would not be able to rest in peace.
The next morning, just as the sky was beginning to light up and the sky was still pale outside, Gu Nan quietly got out of bed. He looked at Ran Qiuye, who was still sleeping soundly, her long eyelashes casting a faint shadow under her eyelids, and then he went to wash up quietly. After cleaning up, he walked to the bed and whispered, "Qiuye, I'm going to work."
Ran Qiuye was gently awakened by his movement. She rubbed her sleepy eyes, sat up and looked at him: "Why are you here so early today? Is there something going on at the factory?"
Gu Nan walked over, placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, and said with a smile, "What could it be? The steel mill is holding a morning meeting today to arrange the production tasks for this week. As the deputy director, I have to take the lead in making arrangements. I'll go over early to make arrangements so that I don't have to rush around."
Ran Qiuye smiled, reached out to straighten his collar, and advised: "Then be careful on the road, drive slowly, and don't be too tired when you get to the factory, and make sure to rest." She knew that Gu Nan was in charge of many things in the factory now and was indeed busy, so she didn't ask any more questions and just thought that there really was a morning meeting.
Gu Nan responded, picked up the briefcase by the door, turned around, gently closed the door, and left the yard. The morning glow was slowly spreading across the horizon, and a new day had begun. But he knew that today was destined to be a restless one.
Gu Nan pushed open the door and walked out, but instead of rushing to the alley entrance, he paused at the doorway. Not long after, a dark figure scurried out of the yard. It was Heizi. Wagging its tail, it approached Gu Nan's feet, nuzzling against his trouser leg, as if to invite praise.
This is what Gu Nan was waiting for. He squatted down, touched Heizi's head, and whispered, "Lead the way for me. I want to see how many people they have hidden. Remember, be careful and don't alert them."
Heizi seemed to understand, letting out a soft "woooo" sound in his throat, then turned and ran deeper into the alley, looking back at Gu Nan every few steps to make sure he was following. Gu Nan followed behind him slowly, his eyes scanning the surroundings vigilantly - the shadows in the corners of the walls, the corners where debris was piled, all of which might hide eyes.
The two men and their dog walked through two quiet alleys, finally stopping in front of an abandoned factory. The red brick walls were mottled and crumbling, and the rusty iron gate stood ajar, exuding a desolate atmosphere. Heizi paused beside the door, barking softly twice inside, then turned to look at Gu Nan, as if to say, "This is it."
Gu Nan glanced at the dark factory gate, his brows furrowed slightly. Not wanting Heizi to risk anything, he patted his neck and said, "Just wait for me outside. I'll go in and take a look. There's nothing fishy going on inside, so I can get you hurt."
Heizi seemed to understand what he meant and retreated obediently into the weeds nearby, only his two dark eyes staring at the door. Gu Nan took a deep breath and gently pushed open the iron door. The hinges creaked harshly, a sound that was particularly clear in the silent alley. He walked in lightly. The factory was empty except for a few piles of discarded iron frames and sacks, covered in dense cobwebs. It was obvious that no one had been there for a long time.
Gu Nan's heart skipped a beat—something was wrong. He searched every corner, the workshop, the warehouse, even the small cubicle in the corner, but he couldn't find a single person, not even a fresh footprint or cigarette butt. It was too clean.
