Chapter 902 Being followed
Chapter 902 Being followed
Gu Nan didn't take Banggeng's resentment to heart at all. What kind of trouble could a half-grown boy about to go to the countryside cause? He just treated it as an insignificant gust of wind that would blow away.
As he left home that morning, Gu Nan had a vague feeling that something was amiss, as if a pair of eyes were watching him from the shadows. But when he looked back, the alley was deserted, and he couldn't pinpoint what was wrong. He kept quiet, planning to go to his master first, as usual—a habit ingrained in him, unshakable.
Not long after walking, the feeling of being watched returned, this time more distinct. Gu Nan continued walking, but a sense of alarm welled up in his heart: it looked like someone was following him. He immediately changed his mind and decided not to go to his master's house. If these people found out where his master lived, it would be troublesome.
Gu Nan walked steadily toward the steel mill, the vague feeling of being watched still lingering. He had originally planned to go to the security department upon arrival and explain the incident of being followed, but then he thought it was probably a personal vendetta against him, and there was no need to make it public, as it might affect his work, so he suppressed the idea.
Pushing open the office door, Gu Nan poured himself a cup of hot water, his fingertips pinching the warm wall of the cup. After thinking for a moment, he picked up the phone on the table and dialed Uncle Tong Ren's number. The moment the call was connected, his tone took on a subtle solemnity: "Uncle Tong, I may need your help."
On the other end of the line, Tong Ren's voice came through with his usual hearty smile: "Stinky boy, what trouble have you run into again? Could it be that those old men and women in your courtyard are thinking of occupying the empty house behind your house again?"
Gu Nan couldn't help laughing at what he said, and quickly denied it: "It's not this, uncle. It's another thing, come to think of it..." He suddenly paused, and his fingers holding the receiver tightened slightly - he had never mentioned being followed to anyone, and he hadn't even revealed anything unusual to those around him. How could Uncle Tong know that he "had something wrong"?
Tong Ren seemed to have guessed his doubts, and a chuckle came from the phone: "Do you think you can keep such a small movement secret? Although it wasn't you who called the police, I am in charge of the public security in this area. Any disturbances in the surrounding area will reach my ears. Don't think about it, just tell me, what trouble have you encountered?"
Gu Nan's heart warmed, and without hesitation, he told him everything about how he had felt like someone was secretly following him for the past two days, and how the other party's whereabouts were concealed but had never stopped. At the end, he added with a bit of worry, "Uncle Tong, I'm fine myself. I'm strong and have seen some things. I'm just worried that they will be desperate and attack Qiu Ye and her family. That would be terrible."
Tong Ren was silent for a moment, as if pondering the severity of the matter. Then he said in a deep voice, "Gu Nan, listen to me. Do what you need to do next. Just pretend nothing happened and don't alert the enemy. I'll send someone over after get off work this afternoon. We'll follow the clues and naturally catch the person who's following you."
Gu Nan finally breathed a sigh of relief and nodded quickly, "Okay, thank you, uncle." After hanging up the phone, he leaned back in his chair and breathed a long sigh of relief, feeling much more at ease. In fact, even without Tong Ren's help, he had secretly kept an eye on the other party's whereabouts and was somewhat confident that he could handle it himself. It was just that having more people and more security was a good idea, especially when it came to family.
The day passed quickly. When the bell rang in the afternoon, Gu Nan packed up his things as usual, walked out of the steel mill slowly, pretending to be oblivious, and headed towards home.
The two people who were following him saw that he was completely defenseless and walked with ease. They couldn't help but look at each other and muttered in a low voice: "There's nothing special about this Gu Nan. He looks easy to keep an eye on. It's not what we expected." The two exchanged glances and followed him quietly, not realizing that they had already been stared at by another pair of eyes.
Gu Nan walked home with ease, thinking to himself: The reason why I told Uncle Tong Ren about the matter instead of solving it myself is because I have a family now, and there is really no need to waste my time and energy on those worthless trash.
Back at the courtyard gate, the two men assigned to monitor him were skulking in a corner, their eyes fixed on the gate, clearly wondering if Gu Nan would make another move. They muttered to themselves: Gu Nan's daily route is very fixed: from the courtyard to the steel mill, with a crowded and congested area along the way. If they really wanted to strike, they wouldn't find a suitable opportunity. It seems they'll have to be patient and wait until they find a quiet, secluded place before striking.
But they never expected that their every move had already been seen by others - not far behind them, two plainclothes police officers were staring at them closely, they were Li Sheng and Hu Han.
Li Sheng nudged Hu Han beside him with his elbow and lowered his voice, "I say, why don't we just arrest these two guys? Look, there are only two of them here, so we can definitely take action."
Hu Han shook his head slightly, his eyes still fixed on the target. "That won't do. You stay here and watch. Our mission isn't just to capture these two minions, but more importantly, to follow the clues, uncover the people behind them, and figure out where their lair is. If we act now, wouldn't that alert the enemy?"
Li Sheng nodded, but he was deeply unhappy. He felt like a complete waste of his talent, doing surveillance work here. After all, he was a top graduate from a prestigious university, and he'd always wanted to achieve great things. But ever since arriving at the Public Security Bureau, Director Tong seemed to be targeting him, assigning him nothing but trivial tasks.
Just like today's job, it was just keeping an eye on a few street thugs. Such a small matter, even a newcomer could handle it, so why would he need to go out in person? Li Sheng couldn't help but complain to Hu Han again: "Such a trivial matter, I really don't know if it's worth our police's effort? I think it's a complete waste of talent. I don't know who Gu Nan has offended to warrant such a big fuss."
Hu Han glanced at him and said earnestly, "You've just arrived, and you don't know a lot about the bureau yet. We can't rush this kind of thing. Who knows who's behind them and what's going on? Acting rashly could very well ruin everything. We can't make such a hasty decision."
Li Sheng nodded on the surface, but in his heart he didn't listen to what he said at all. In his opinion, only by solving a shocking case could he truly gain the attention and reuse of his superiors. These trivial surveillance tasks were simply a waste of his talent and time.
