Chapter 1170 - 1165: The Snow Layer is Moving
Chapter 1170: Chapter 1165: The Snow Layer is MovingThick, dark clouds blanketed the entire sky, and heavy snow continued to drift down from the heavens. Gusts of wind occasionally blew, whipping up white waves, and people’s footsteps appeared deep and shallow on the snow-covered streets. Cars, unable to move, could only sit parked on the streets, leaving themselves to be buried by the snow. For the people out and about, the luckiest thing was to step on the roof of a car hidden beneath the thick layer of snow.
Song Muyuan and Ci Lin, like the pedestrians around them, were half-buried in snow as they trudged through, their figures disappearing into the heavy falling snow before long.
After a little more than two hours had passed, on the snow-enshrouded streets near Dongsheng Co-management in Xige City, one decaying hand after another burst through the layer of snow as a horde of zombies crawled out from beneath it.
Since The Third Year of the Apocalypse, the greenhouse effect began to diminish, and each subsequent winter grew longer, with heavier snowfalls. Every winter, the once bustling city streets would be completely buried under snow, especially in cities closer to the north like Dongsheng Co-management, where the snowfall was even more severe.
Therefore, in winter, the usually dense zombies on the streets would be covered by blizzards, and in the cold weather, the zombies would enter a hibernation state, their sense of smell weakened by the freezing conditions.
The streets would become a white expanse, devoid of any visible zombies because the ones in the city were all buried by the snow. Therefore, winter was the best opportunity for survivors to venture into the Old City to scavenge for supplies, a much safer endeavor.
One didn’t need to guard against the densely-packed zombies on the streets, just watch out for the zombies mindlessly leaping down from the high-rise buildings.
On a street in Xige City, a group of survivors, wrapped in thick clothing and fully equipped, steadily trekked forward over the snow. They wore strange shoes with unusually broad soles that prevented them from sinking and being buried in the deep snow layer.
"Move faster, everybody. There are fewer people heading to the City Center this year, so getting there early means a better haul."
The person at the front of this group urged those behind him, but no one responded. They all carefully navigated the snow, unsure how many zombies lay buried under the nearly two-meter-high snowdrifts. One misstep, awakening the resting zombies beneath, could spell their doom.
Those venturing into the Old City during winter were usually survivors from Dongsheng Co-management who held low status. It was the same with other survivor bases and Sanctuary Cities since most were ordinary people. During the seasons of spring, summer, and fall, entering the Old City could easily result in getting injured and infected by the zombies, turning into one themselves. Only the evolved humans dared to
"What in the world is going on? Where’s that sound coming from?"
People turned their heads frantically, searching, but again, nothing unusual was spotted.
After about half a minute, someone noticed movement in the snow ahead and quickly pointed: "Look over there."
At this prompt, everyone watched intently. Indeed, the snow at that spot was stirring!
As they watched, terror filled their eyes. At first, it was just one spot, but within moments, other areas of snow began to wriggle as well!
